Jaya Medical Centre SUCCESSFULLY HOLDS 1ST EINR SYMPOSIUM
23-25 May 2002
In conjunction with the launch of the VIR Centre, SJMC
organized a symposium on Endovascular and Interventional
Neuroradiology (EINR 2002) in collaboration with the College
of Radiology, Malaysian Neuroscience Society and supported
by the Malaysian Medical Association (Selangor Branch). The
3-day symposium from 23rd to 25th May 2002 was preceded by a
Pre-Congress Workshop on gynaecological interventions on
22nd May 2002.
Held
for the first time in Malaysia, the symposium aimed to
create an awareness and promote VIR, a sub-specialty in
radiology that is relatively new in this country, to doctors
and healthcare professionals in the Asia Pacific region and
update them on the latest developments in the field through
lectures and live cases. Well-known international and
Malaysian medical faculty members who are experts in their
respective fields shared their knowledge, experience and
clinical judgement with delegates. The international faculty
came from the United Kingdom, China and Singapore. Delegates
came from Indonesia, Vietnam and Sri Lanka.
Among the respected speakers who presented lectures during
the symposium included Dr James V. Byrne, Consultant
Interventional Neuroradiologist from the Radcliffe
Infirmary, Oxford, U.K., Dr Richard Edwards, Consultant
Interventional Radiologist from Gartnavel General Hospital,
Glasgow and Dr Jianmin Liu, Professor of Neurosurgery at
Changhai Hospital, Shanghai, China. The highlight of this
symposium was the demonstration of live cases that were
transmitted from the operating room to the conference hall
allowing the delegates to actively participate in the
symposium.

The
scientific programme was drawn up primarily to emphasize on
current and emerging diagnostic, therapeutic and treatment
modalities within the field of endovascular and
neuroradiology intervention. It offered the nearly 200
delegates comprising interventional neuroradiologists and
radiologists, other consultants, nurses, related paramedical
professions and industry professionals, a good platform to
stimulate discussion and exchange of ideas. The wide range
of topics featured in the symposium encompassed aortic
intervention, revascularisation, intracranial aneurysms,
embolisation, cerebrospinal arteriovenous malformation,
stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stroke diagnosis and
intervention.
The primary emphasis in the symposium was mainly on
interventional neuroradiology techniques stressing on case
selection, technical considerations, new techniques and
developments, and applications in surgical management and
outcome. The final day of the symposium was solely dedicated
to the subject of stroke.
For the general public who were keen to learn more about new
advances in the management of stroke, a free public forum in
Mandarin was held on Sunday afternoon, 26th May at the
Subang Jaya Medical Centre by Dr Jianmin Liu of China. More
than 70 members of the public turned up for the talk which
provided amongst others, useful insights into treatment
options used in China and the modern medical advances
available for the management of stroke locally.
