Docendo discimus – we learn by teaching

The Malaysian Radiological Society founded in 1976, comprises radiologist and radiotherapists in Malaysia. To date, there are about 150 radiologist and radiotherapists in the country.

With the rapid advances in diagnostic and therapeutic facilities, we feel that the public should be better informed of the various tests and treatment available. It is also important for the public to know who is a radiologist or radiotherapist and how he/she is trained to provide specialist care in the management of the patient. The facilities now available for x-ray diagnosis, imaging and therapy are so specialize that proper training is absolutely vital. Radiologist and radiotherapists today play an important role in the management of patients. We hope you will find this “book” informative and useful.

I wish to place on record my special thanks to Dr Basri JJ Abdullah and his editorial members who have made this book possible.

Dato’ Dr Joginder Singh, FRCR

President,
Malaysian Radiological Society

Introduction

Diagnostic imaging is a specialty in medicine, which includes a wide variety of imaging procedures. Till a few years ago, it was called Diagnostic Radiology, or more simply “ X-ray”. Diagnostic Imaging has its origins with the discovery of X-rays in 1895 by W.C. Roentgen, and has since grown beyond probably even the widest dreams of professor Roentgen himself. Over the years, new imaging techniques, not using X-rays have emerged, namely Ultrasound Scanning, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging, thus prompting the change in name to Diagnostic Imaging. Radiotherapy is another specialty in medicine, which makes use of radiation to treat patients with cancer. It may be used alone or in combination with other forms of treatment.

Recognising the apprehension that a patient undergoes prior to any examination or treatment, the Malaysian Radiological Society, in its continued effort to upgrade the practice of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiotherapy in our country, has decide to come up with a book to provide more information to the public and especially the patients. We sincerely hope that the public will find this information useful and help to allay their anxiety. It would be beyond our scope to provide every detail of every procedure, short of writing a textbook. Therefore, the information contained in this book would only cover the important features of the common examinations. The public is encouraged to discuss the specific investigations they are being subjected to with the requesting doctor or with the radiologist or radiographer.

In future, we hope to improve on this pilot issue, with positive feedback and constructive criticism from the public as well as from other healthcare providers.

Feedback on this book is welcome and can be directed to:
