Our patient briefings explain a variety of diagnostic procedures and treatments, how patients should prepare for them, and what patients can expect to experience during and after the procedure. These briefings are provided as a service to help patients address their medical care with less anxiety and greater comfort.

The First Radiology Museum In Malaysia – Muar, Johor

The Muar Radiology Museum was officially opened by our Minister of Health Dato' Chua Jui Meng on the 23rd of October 2001. It is the first radiology museum of its kind in the country and has taken almost 2 years to materalise. The exhibit items are mainly old equipment, which have been salvaged and restored from the old radiology department. There are also educational materials and posters. All these are arranged around the waiting area within the department.

These exhibits will provide a source of educational and reference materials for both patients and student radiographers who come to the department. Some of our interesting exhibits include a light safe film storage cupboard, manual processors, infrared fluoroscopy goggles, mobile x-ray units , densitometer, old x-ray film view box and many more. Since its opening we have received many compliments from the public and distinguished visitors to the Hospital.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of my department for their tireless effort, the Hospital Director for the support and last but not least the Department of Radiology, University Malaya Medical Centre and Prof. Dr Ng Kwan Hoong for contributing some of the exhibit items and valuable advice to make this Museum a reality .We hope that radiology departments in other hospitals throughout the country will support this museum. All contributions will be duly acknowledged.

Dr Chong Aun Kee
Consultant Radiologist & Head of Radiology Department
Hospital Muar, Muar, Johor

Editor’s Note: We thank Dr Chong for his contribution to Radiology Malaysia. To enable more to view the exhibits, they will be show cased in our own VIRTUAL MUSEUM.

A basic X-ray unit with a table. A lead door (shield) on the right and on the left is an old version of the vertical stand for radiographs taken in the standing position

An old manual processing unit for developing, fixing and drying x-ray films

This densitometer is used to check the density of the x-ray film (radiograph). This is an instrument used in Quality Assurance tests.

In the old days, when performing fluoroscopic examinations (where the radiologist examines the patient in real time compared to static radiographs), they had to wear the Goggle to protect their eyes from the radiation. Today, the fluoroscopic examination does not require the radiologist to view the image “plate” directly but instead the information is relayed via computer circuits to a monitor.
