The Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign 2002 in Penang Island Hospital was officially launched by the CEO of the hospital, Dr Chan Kok Ewe on 6 July 2002. This was followed by a Public Seminar on Early Breast Cancer Detection. The speakers were Dr TM Goh (Early Detection of Breast Cancer: Why? How?), Dr Francis Lau (How Imaging can Help to Detect Breast Cancer Early) and Dr Jeyashree Srinivasan (How you can do Self Breast Examination?). Penang Island Hospital had actually started their Counselling Booths on Early Breast Cancer Detection in April 2002. For the Hands-on Self Breast Examination Workshop, the first group of 20 will be taught on 27 July 2002. This Hands-on Workshop will be held every first Saturday of the month. All these will be provided “free of charge” to the general public as Penang Island Hospital’s contribution to the fight against breast cancer. Penang Island has taken the effort to train their team of 9 senior professional staff, under the supervision of the facilitator and instructor, Dr Jeyashree for the SBE workshops. Two surgeons in the hospital are the advisors to the SBE Programme. This campaign is complementary and in synergy with the nationwide NCWO Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign 2002, held in collaboration the College of Radiology, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia as well as the Breast Cancer Welfare Association.
