Ultrasound of the upper abdomen

This is a relatively cheap and quick method to identify the causes of obstructive jaundice. It is relatively inexpensive and takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete. In addition it does not use ionising radiation and in urgent cases can performed without any preparation. Ultrasound is able to demonstrate the upper abdominal organs such as the liver and biliary duct system, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys and spleen. Dilated ducts can be seen and the cause for this can be ascertained. 

Major drawbacks include obscuration of the distal extrahepatic ducts or pancreas by bowel gas.
