Siemens MAGNETOM Avanto Incorporates Tim, The First
Seamless, Whole Body Coil Design
1
Dec 2003 ― Siemens Medical Solutions announced the first
installation of the MAGNETOM Avanto, its newest 1.5 Tesla
Magnetic Resonance (MR) system, and the first product to
incorporate Siemens revolutionary Total imaging matrix
(Tim™) technology, at New York University (NYU) Medical
Center. Tim is the first whole body surface coil design to
seamlessly combine up to 76 coil elements and 32 RF channels
[76x32].
“The
MAGNETOM Avanto symbolizes a new era of MR image quality,
enabling high resolution full-body images in a shorter
acquisition time,” said Heinrich Kolem, president of the MR
Division of Siemens Medical Solutions. “The new Tim
technology makes Siemens again the industry leader in
innovation and evidences the company’s commitment to
advancing clinical applications and workflow improvements,
providing solutions to our customers’ daily problems.”
The
MAGNETOM Avanto offers seamless metastasis evaluation, whole
CNS imaging and visualization of vascular diseases. It also
features Siemens unique iPAT (integrated Parallel
Acquisition Technique) that provides fast image acquisition
with parallel imaging in all dimensions, including head to
toe, front to back, and side to side. Phoenix™ software
allows clinicians to transfer protocol for medical images
from a CD, making it possible to initiate a scan directly
from the image. Additionally, the system features
AudioComfort, reducing acoustical noise by up to 97
percent.
“The
Avanto is going to greatly impact our ability to diagnose
and treat patients in a more timely and comfortable manner,”
said Dr. Vivian Lee, associate professor and vice-chair of
research in the Department of Radiology, NYU Medical
Center. “Because we won’t have to change coils on the
patients, we can obtain accurate full-body examinations more
quickly, and with less hassle and stress to our patients.
The studies will be more comfortable for patients in several
ways. For example, this technology allows feet-first
examinations, which greatly decrease anxiety for patients
who are uncomfortable in small spaces, and the new design
system will mean a much quieter examination, which will be
wonderful for everyone involved!”
The
MAGNETOM Avanto is the first Siemens MR system to fully
incorporate Tim, the first whole body surface coil concept
and RF technology that will open the door to advanced
clinical applications. Tim allows the user to select exams,
not coils, and provides the highest acquisition speed
without image artifacts or restrictions in coverage, giving
radiologists the opportunity to conduct advanced
applications, such as metastasis evaluation. The Tim
Application Suite includes a comprehensive set of clinical
applications, including Neuro, Angio, Cardiac, Body,
Oncology, Orthopedic, and Pediatric. These suites are
optimized for Tim and contained in the basic configuration
of any Tim system. Siemens MAGNETOM Symphony, Sonata and
Trio are also upgradeable* to include Tim technology.
Tim
technology features a maximum of 76 seamlessly integrated
coil elements, with up to 32 RF channels [76x32]. The coils
are light-weight and comfortable for the patient, e.g. the
Body Matrix coil weighs less than two pounds. Image quality
is increased by up to 100 percent signal-to-noise ratio.
The Avanto’s Tim technology means that patient repositioning
and manual coil changes are virtually eliminated during
exams, enabling full body imaging in a single exam.
