Investing in the Future Today: Leadership Course for Radiologists – 22-23 April 2004

By Dr Evelyn Ho

A leadership course for radiologists was organized by the Department of Radiology, University of Malaya Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur and co-sponsored by the College of Radiology, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia. This was funded by a generous grant from Schering AG.

30 eager participants registered for this course to prepare radiologists in Malaysia for the tremendous changes taking place in the healthcare scene. With the increasing complexity of imaging and the need to improve management of organizations, the current emphasis on skills and knowledge as being the way forward is deemed necessary. There is a need to identify the younger generation of radiologists with the potential to be groomed for future roles in an increasingly complex world. To ensure radiologists are fully capable for the challenges in the future, they must be prepared now.

This 2-day practical, highly interactive and experiential learning (and “fun”) workshop was conducted by Dr Ranjit Singh Malhi. Dr Ranjit is internationally renowned as a consultant, trainer and prolific author in the areas of Total Quality Management, Management and Development and Personal Development. He is CEO and Principal Consultant of TQM Consultants Sdn Bhd and Self-Esteem Seminars Sdn Bhd. He was recently appointed as the Vice–President of the International Council for Self Esteem. He is also President of the Malaysian Association for Self-Esteem and Peak Performance (MASEPP).

The rationale for the workshop was: “To lead others successfully, one must first learn how to lead oneself effectively”. Mastering self-leadership enables a manager to optimize his or her potential and to build a strong foundation for leading others.

The workshop was officiated by Datin Latifah Endot, Deputy Director of University Malaya Medical Centre. Dr Sebastian Guth, Regional Managing Director of Schering AG also delivered a short but meaningful speech related to the topic of the workshop. As Head of Radiology Department, Associate Professor BJJ Abdullah shared his vision for radiologists. Dr Sumithra Ranganathan was the Course Coordinator.
