Master of the Academy of Medicine, Dato’ Dr (Mrs) Kew Officiates at 29th College of Radiology Annual Scientific Meeting – Kuala Lumpur, 3-4 June 2006

by Dr Evelyn Ho

Yang Berbahagia, Dato’ Dr (Mrs) S.T. Kew, Master of the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia was Guest of Honour at the 29th College of Radiology Annual Scientific Meeting and Trade Exhibition on 3 June 2006. This annual scientific meeting was also in collaboration with the Radiological Society of North America’s International Visiting Professor Programme and the theme was Paediatric Imaging.

Dato’ Dr (Mrs) Kew in her address to the delegates of the meeting spoke on the evolution of the radiological field over the years since x-rays were discovered. Radiology now encompassed imaging and therapeutics and the practice had changed completely. This specialty being very much technology and machine-based was therefore capital intensive. She highlighted that as in other specialities in Medicine, the College needed to work with the other specialties to address the issues of blurring borders and turf warfare, and resolve many of the issues that concern the profession. The College of Radiology and other Colleges and professional bodies should lead the way in tackling these issues for the best interest of our patients.

At the meeting, there were 132 participants made up of radiologists and radiographers. The lectures and practical “How I do It” sessions covered two whole days of the weekend. The faculty of speakers were Dr Sjirk J Westra (Harvard Medical School), Dr L. Santiago Medina (Harvard Medical School, Miami Children’s Hospital), Dr Kimberly E. Applegate (Indiana University School of Medicine). Fields covered in paediatrics were neuroradiology, abdomen, chest and musculoskeletal. The delegates to the meeting should be congratulated on their stamina as the final day ended at 6.30pm!

A dinner for the speakers and chairpersons was held on 3rd June 2006 (courtesy of Schering).

From L to R: Dr Subramani (Vice President, CoR), Prof Dr Humairah (Treasurer, CoR), Dr Evelyn Ho (Hon Secretary, CoR), Dr Sjirk Westra, Dato’ Dr (Mrs) ST Kew (Master, Acad of Medicine), Dr Santiago Medina, Dr Kimberley Applegate, Prof Dr Basri JJ Abdullah (President, CoR) and Dr Alex Tang (Councillor, CoR).

There were 11 oral papers and 20 e-posters submitted at the scientific meeting. The Best Oral Free Paper Award was won by Professor Dr Zulfiqar M. A. (Normal Mammographic Parenchymal Pattern in Malaysian Women) and second prize was won by Dr Melanie C. Robert (Clinical Relevance of CT Angiogram and CT Perfusion Study of the Brain in Clinical Meningitis). The Best Poster Award was won by Dr Suriani Mohd Saini (The Use of Multislice CT in Determining the Outcome and Management in Haemodynamically Stable Blunt Abdominal Trauma Patients) and second prize was won by Dr Sharifah Aishah Al-Edrus (Tuberculous Meningitis: Neuroimaging Features, Clinical Staging and Outcome).
