Close to 100 people comprising
radiologists, radiographers and medical physicists attended an evening
series of lectures organised by the
College of Radiology
and sponsored by
Siemens/Meditel Electronics. The topics
were Whole Body Magnetic Resonance (MR) Imaging & Clinical Applications;
Contrast-Enhanced 3D MR Angiography and New Sequences in MR Imaging.
Dr Mathias Goyen, Associate Professor of Radiology at
the University Medical Centre Hamburg Eppendorf was the key speaker. His
research interests were in all aspects of MRI including whole body MRI.
An example of where whole body MRI was very useful would be to see the
tumour load in bone metastases.
Prof Goyen in his enlightening
lectures tinged with humour, including his experience on using whole
body MRI in preventative medicine where healthy asymptomatic people were
screened. The “sickness” business was big business but was a reactive
business. The wellness business was proactive. In Germany,
screening with MRI was packaged with a physical check up, laboratory
tests and supplemented with ultrasound and others investigations if
necessary. It was a personalized service for every individual.
Ms Marivic Santos-Sata
then took the audience on the tour through the evolvement of MR
Sequences from 1977 to date. Technological improvements have made
the image produced better, enable imaging even with less than
cooperative patients (movement), improvements in diagnosing acute
bleeding in the brain and allowed faster imaging (important for
imaging in children and also for patients in pain!). So now it was
possible to do more, do it faster and with greater diagnostic
confidence .
