Radiologists Inducted at the Opening Ceremony of the 40th Malaysia-Singapore Congress of Medicine  –  Petaling Jaya 24 - 27 Aug 2006

“Coming to Terms with Acute Care Medicine” was the theme of the 40th Malaysia-Singapore Congress of Medicine held in the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. Precongress workshops were held on the 22-24 Aug 2006 with an Advanced Life Support Instructors Course (ALSIC), Table Top Exercise for Major Incident Management as well as the Use of Simulation in Acute Care and Sepsis in Acute Care (AIM). The scientific programme of the congress was multidisciplinary in nature as acute care medicine involved many fields in medicine. 

The congress was officially launched at 4 pm on 24 Aug 2006. Gracing the ceremony was DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Perak Darul Ridzuan, His Royal Highness Sultan Azlan Shah, Royal Patron of the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia. The 16th Tun Dr Ismail Oration was delivered by Prof Lim Pin from Singapore.  Prof Lim Pin has his origins in Batu Pahat, Malaysia. He spoke on “Demands and Challenges of Modern Medicine”.

At the Opening Ceremony, the National Specialists Register as well as the book on Management Aspects of Acute Care was launched by our Honourable Minister of Health, Dato’ Dr Chua Soi Lek. The recipient of the 2nd Academy of Medicine Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad Award was Dato’ Dr Lim Say Wan. Tun Abdul Razak Research Awards, conferment of Fellowship on Presidents of overseas Colleges/Organisations, conferment of Fellowship on Malaysian Academicians as well as induction of new members of the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia also took place. The Director-General of Health, Yg Berbahagia Tan Sri Datuk Dr Mohd Ismail Merican was also present at the opening ceremony. 

College of Radiology members who were inducted were Dr Ahmad Sobri b Muda, Dr Amran b Abdul Rahman, Dr Liew Wai Fong, Dr Malkit Kaur Dhillon, Dr Tan Sook Pei and Assoc Prof Dr Yang Faridah Abdul Aziz.

The joint councils’ meeting between the Academies of Medicine of Malaysia and Singapore was held at the lunch time before the official opening ceremony of the Congress on 24 Aug 2006.  On Friday, 25 Aug 2006, the various Malaysian Colleges hosted dinners for their counterparts from Singapore.  

On 26 Aug 2006, in another lunch time meeting, the joint councils and the Presidents/Representatives of overseas Academies/Colleges met to present and discuss Continuing Professional Development. The official dinner was held on 26 Aug 2006. 

The Academy of Medicine of Malaysia held their 40th Annual General Meeting (AGM) after the congress ended on 27 Aug 2006. Prof Dato’ Dr Khalid Kadir took over the helm of the Academy as Master from Prof Dato’ Dr Mrs S.T. Kew. 

Sunday, 27 Aug 2006 proved a long day as this was followed by the final workshop on “Future Directions in Postgraduate training – Views from the Profession”. The council and members from the Academy as well as the Ministry of Health doctors and representatives were present to attend this workshop and give their views.

Joint Councils Meet
Dr Ho Lai Yun, Master, Academy of Medicine, Singapore with Prof Dato’ Dr Mrs ST Kew; in the discussion following his presentation on Continuing Professional Development and Recertification Bernard Francisco Ribeiro, President, Royal College of Surgeons of England shared the UK experience on Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Recertification Napier Maurice Thompson, President of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians gave his perspective on the a clinically relevant CPD programme and that is should be evidence based
 

Lizo Ebden Mazwai, President, The Colleges of Medicine of South Africa is a Professor of Surgery at the Walter Sisulu Univeresity (WSU) for Technology and Science (Eastern Cape) in South Africa.
