“Seeing
with Heart….”
Another year whizzes by and
work is already in progress for 2007 and 2008 programmes!
The
CoR mammogram programme ran until the end of November in Kuantan and
Johor. Meanwhile, collaterals continue to be updated and where
available, distributed to organisations or individuals wishing to
promote breast health.
The subsidies for
the mammograms were made possible by grants from the MMA Foundation
Radiology Fund, Johnson & Johnson as well as from the funds received as
the nominee beneficiary of the National Cancer Society of Malaysia
winning the NST-Price Waterhouse Coopers Humanitarian Awards 2005.
For the first
time for selected participants from small towns, the CoR was able to
fund the cost of mammogram or ultrasound guided biopsies for suspicious
breast lesions discovered in the CoR mammogram programme. This was to
ensure that the diagnosis of any abnormalities discovered in the CoR
mammogram programme was investigated to the best of our facilities for
those from small towns where referral to the main breast centres would
entail more cost and traveling.
On the matter of
funds for the CoR’s
breast cancer awareness programmes – we have to thank individuals
such as Linda Bretze, Marti Butler and their friends for their donation
of RM 6,435 raised through a raffle on a quilt they made. Estee Lauder
donated RM 40,000 through their Pink October campaigns and programmes,
and a highly successful Charity Hi-Tea At Shangri-La in September 2006.
The CoR was truly
blessed this year as they were the beneficiary to the Pantai Medical
Centre, Bangsar’s Wear It Pink 2 fund raising activities. RM 100,000 was
donated to the CoR’s public awareness and subsidised mammogram cause.
These funds come
in the “nick” of time, as the MMA Foundation Radiology Fund's grant
comes to an end this year. By the end of 2006, close to 5,000 women
would have benefited from the CoR value added Mammogram Programme.
The CoR has also
embarked on assisting in the National Council of Women’s Organisations
Male Support of Breast Cancer Screening in Women Training Programme. The
1st Training Workshop was held from 16-19 Nov 2006.
The Radiology
Malaysia Online Quiz this year has taken on a treasure hunt flavour with
a focus to get people to surf to various parts of the website and
discover its contents. We thank Meditel Electronics Sdn Bhd for their 6th
year of support. Watch out for the Prize Presentation in the first
quarter of next year 2007!
Scientific
programmes are being planned and next year’s calendar is fast filling
up. We hope our pioneering efforts in the use of ICT to access highly
sought after conferences such as the European Congress of Radiology will
be successful and beneficial to the region. The ECR will take place in
March 2007, and live transmissions of some of the tracks for the
Radiology, Oncology and allied community in Kuala Lumpur will be made
available at an affordable cost. The cost of travel, board and lodging
at the ECR is prohibitive for some members and this is one of the ways
that the CoR can help our community in their Continuing Medical and
Professional Development.
The CoR will also
be contributing to the College of Physicians Annual Scientific Meeting
with talks on Interventional Radiology in March 2007.
Our Annual Scientific and General Meeting will be held from 2-3 June
2007 and it will focus on Imaging in Infection, Therapy and
Intervention. A multidisciplinary approach is in keeping with the
convergence of the various medical disciplines and various fields in
Biomedical Imaging and Intervention.
Come July 2007, an interventional symposium is in the pipeline to be
held in Kuala Lumpur and the CoR will also participate in the
Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine to be held in Singapore this
year from 19-22 July 2007. In August 2007, the CoR is involved in the
scientific programme for the 1st Kuala Lumpur International
Breast and Colorectal Cancer Congress to be held in the KL Convention
Centre. A pre-congress workshop on Breast Ultrasound will be organised.
The CoR is a
joint organiser of the 8th
Asia Pacific
Congress of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology in 2008 to
be held in Kuala Lumpur.
The National
Specialist Register was launched on 24 Aug 2006. To this end, it is an
exercise for all the CoR members to “register” themselves and pay the
subscription for being on the register. The criteria had to be carefully
drawn up and now Continuing Professional Development requirements need
to be decided upon to ensure maintenance on the register. The NSR was
primarily set up to protect the public and make available a register for
the public to access in the search for various specialists.
The Joint Cardiac
CT statement working group comprises members from College of Radiology
and the National Heart Association of Malaysia. Our co-chair are Adjunct
Prof Dr Sim Kui-Hian (Consultant Cardiologist) and Assoc Prof Yang
Faridah (Consultant Clinical Radiologist). We look forward to the
announcement of the statement in 2007.
Nominations will
be open for
Founding
Fathers Awards – to give recognition to outstanding individuals in
their contribution to the development of Clinical Radiology/Oncology,
Medical Physics as well as charitable work.
There are many
areas to develop in Radiology and Oncology. Members must step up to be
counted and to contribute to their own professional development. Whilst
our numbers may be small compared to other disciplines in medicine such
as internal medicine physicians or surgeons, we all have to start
somewhere. Special Interest Groups offer a way to begin to nurture
interest in subspecialities.
As always, our
appreciation and thanks to the industry for their support of our various
activities; our colleagues and members as well as the public for their
contributions to help the CoR stay relevant in a changing world!
Wishing all Merry Christmas 2006 and a Happy New Year 2007!
