Our patient briefings explain a variety of diagnostic procedures and treatments, how patients should prepare for them, and what patients can expect to experience during and after the procedure. These briefings are provided as a service to help patients address their medical care with less anxiety and greater comfort.

RESOURCE AND WELLNESS CENTRE

The Resource and Wellness Centre of the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) was officially launched on 31 March 2003 by YB Dato’ Seri Rafidah Aziz, Minister of International Trade & Industry and Principal Patron of NCSM.

Operational since its soft launch at the end of October 2002, the centre offers a holistic approach to the care of cancer patients. The cancer patient needs support and information as well as life affirming strategies in their “walk” with cancer. Online information, support groups, self help and healing services, nutrition review as well as counseling services will be made available. The centre will be open from 9am to 4pm, Monday to Friday and by appointment at other times. The contact details are as below.

The NCSM new logo using yellow and rays of light was also unveiled together with a revamped website at the launch.

Take a pictorial tour of the centre on the first floor of Bangunan Persatuan Kebangsaan Kanser in Kuala Lumpur. There are rooms for counseling, meetings, resting, a library and even surfing stations for online information.

Wellness Classes

These are open to those diagnosed with cancer and their families and carers. All services at the Resource and Wellness Centre are free of charge. Donations are welcome.

Qigong
Qigong is a special art of exercise done with mental awareness, relaxation, and consciousness and co-ordinated breathing. The practice of Qigong increases oxygen utilization, improves blood circulation, and increases the level and flow of qi (internal healing energy). This can help maintain optimum health and encourage healing of diseased cells and organs.

Please call 03 2698 7300 or email contact@cancer.org.my for further information or to register for a class.

Meditation & Relaxation
Meditation is a powerful and natural way to relax the mind and body. It can be used to manage stress and pain, and to bring about peace and contentment, particularly during difficult life events.

Please call 03 2698 7300 or email contact@cancer.org.my for further information or to register for a class.

Massage & Aromatherapy
Caring touch through massage movements has been shown to encourage the release of endorphins; chemicals that affect the emotional and physical well-being of adults. They are also the natural pain suppressors of the body. Massage and Aromatherapy can bring real complementary help to those diagnosed with cancer, their families and carers.

The Resource and Wellness Centre has a specifically designed therapy room for aromatherapy and massage. Mrs. Petrus, an Aromatherapist and Masseur with many years experience will be available for appointments. Encik Zaidee, a masseur with extensive experience is also available by appointment.

Please call 03 2698 7300 or email contact@cancer.org.my  for further information or to make an appointment.

Yoga
Yoga helps us listen, support and give our body comfort. The body and mind find balance and harmony to create a sense of wellbeing. Yoga relieves some of the effects of chronic stress and as a result may strengthen the immune system. Physical strength and stamina may improve and ordinary aches and pains may be lessened. It may help to calm the mind and allow for a more peaceful sleep.

Our instructor, Ms. Shailaja, who has several years experience, will conduct weekly classes beginning Wednesday February 12 at 10.00am. Please wear loose comfortable clothing and bring a mat or towel with a small blanket and a pillow.

Please call 03 2698 7300 or email contact@cancer.org.my for further information or to register for a class.

Nutrition Advice
Good nutrition is important for everyone but especially for people with cancer. The world is abounding with experts when it comes to diet and especially when diagnosed with cancer.

The Resource and Wellness Centre has a resident dietitian to provide advice on nutrition before, during and post treatment. They will help you plan a healthy eating programme and guide you through the maze of advertised supplements and alternative nutrition therapies available in Malaysia.

Please call 03 2698 7300 or email contact@cancer.org.my for further information or to make an appointment.

For the Public

Lounge/Library
This is open to the public for information and general enquiries concerning cancer.
Our centre is open 9.00am - 4.00pm from Monday to Friday and by appointment. It is a place for relaxation and rest, a meeting place or feel free to use the library. It hosts a wide range of books covering many types of cancer and ways in which to improve life quality and cope with stress. Many of these books and journals are highly specialised and unavailable elsewhere. The friendly informal atmosphere provides a great location to talk with specially trained staff and others diagnosed with cancer.

Education
From February 2003 we will hold public forums on different types of cancers at The Resource and Wellness Centre. These will be publicised through the press.

Talks at other centres can be arranged. For further information please call 03 2698 7300 or email contact@cancer.org.my
