Talkback Q & A: I am studying medical radiation in Australia. Can I work in Malaysia after this?
I am a Malaysian who is now studying medical radiation in Australia. I am just wondering if I should get accreditation from Australia as a qualified radiographer before I can actually work in Malaysia?

BT, 1 May 2004

You will need a qualification that is recognized by the Ministry of Health to practice as a Radiographer in Radiology or Clinical Oncology in Malaysia.

Medical Radiation Courses are also available locally in Malaysia. It is best that you communicate directly with the Ministry of Health to find out which foreign institutions are recognized by the Ministry of Health, Government of Malaysia.

Malaysia is also currently short of radiographers, and it might be useful to explore this further. You may wish to find out if there are incentives for your field as a Malaysian returning to Malaysia at: The Ministry of Human Resources, Government of Malaysia.

The URL for the Ministry Of Human Resources, Govt of M’sia is: http://www.mohr.gov.my/

The above gives a summary of incentives for Radiologists/Clinical Oncologists coming back to Malaysia.

Talkback Q & A: What is my future after graduating in Medical Radiation?

Actually I have a problem here I am Medical Radiation student in USM and I am quite blurred about my future prospect. I mean after I’ve graduated, will I become a radiologist or what? Could you give an explanation on this?

R, 22 August 2002

The Medical Radiation course is run by the School of Allied Health in USM Health Campus, Kubang Kerian. The coordinator is Associate Professor Dr. Ahmad Zakaria who is a medical physicist. The course was introduced to fill the gap in the country as Malaysia does not have enough medical radiation graduates.

After graduating from this Medical Radiation course, the following are areas that have radiation involvement. Examples are:

  1. physicist in radiotherapy department

  2. radiation protection personnel in radiology department, hospitals, industry

  3. scientist

  4. radiation industry, for example to check leakage in oil industry

  5. occupational health personnel that deal a lot with radiation

Further studies include a Masters in Medical Physics and a PhD later. This can lead to a Lecturer’s position.

You should talk to the coordinator to get a better understanding of where and what you are heading for.

Talkback Q&A - Becoming a radiographer

I would like to study to become a radiographer. Either general radiographer or therapy radiographer is good. If you offer the course, would you tell me more information? If you don't, I hope you can give me the information of another institute or school. Thank you very much.

J. Kim, 2 June 2002

Available Schools of Radiography in Malaysia are:

  • Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia

  • University Malaya Medical Centre

  • Institut Teknologi Mara

Foreigners can do the diploma course in Radiography in the Ministry of Health Schools of Radiography or University Hospital School of Radiography.  The fees are about RM11,000 for Ministry of Health schools of radiography and for the University Hospital, it is about RM12,000.

Talkback Q&A - How do foreign students gain admission into Radiology Training Courses?

Hello, I have a few questions to ask. International students trying to get admission in radiology, what the proper procedure? Are international students allowed to work while they are studying for their post graduation? Average monthly cost for living for a family of four in Malaysia?

FK 7 September 2002

The Radiology Department in the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), Kuala Lumpur currently only accepts a limited number of foreign candidates. These are on a government to government basis. This is because there is not enough places to take in private foreign candidates.

Foreign candidates must have a recognized basic Medical Degree that enables them to be registered with the Malaysian Medical Council. The training posts in the UMMC are not paid posts. The duration of the Radiology course is 4 years.

Janet Low
Secretary, Radiology Department, UMMC

The Radiology Department in University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in Kuala Lumpur currently does not take in private foreign students as there are again not enough training posts. Other departments in UKM have been known to have foreign students but again, the preference is on a government to government basis. If there is a private candidate, then, the candidate must show proof of financial resources.

If the doctor seeks employment, then this should be sought with the Hospital itself (in this case, Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan) and this will be on a contract basis (not the faculty where training is provided). Again, the doctor must possess a basic medical degree which is recognized and registrable with the Malaysian Medical Council.

Prof A Zulfiqar
Radiology Department, UKM

We are sorry but we are unable to provide you with the cost of living for 4 in Malaysia as it would depend in which town you are living in and what type of standard of living you are familiar with.

As for registerable medical degrees, you may seek clarification by writing to:

Malaysian Medical Council
Ministry of Health
Jalan Cenderasari,
50590 Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia
