A section of the attentive audience

by Dr Evelyn Ho

There was no problem with “rise and shine” on 18th March 2007 Sunday morning with many participants arriving early to attend a Magnetic Resonance Imaging workshop focussed on the central nervous system and the musculoskeletal system. It was a chirpy and bright audience who responded to the good morning welcome by the President of the College of Radiology at the start of the session at 9am. A total of 147 radiologists and radiographers attended the workshop. The feedback was good and many were happy they were meeting and “catching up” with their contemporaries from various genres! Participants also brought MRIs of their patients for discussion with the speakers.

The luminary speakers were Walter Kucharczyk, Professor and Chair of the Department of Medical Imaging, University of Toronto and Past President of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Leanne L Seeger, Professor of Diagnostic Radiology (Musculoskeletal), UCLA Department of Radiology and Section Chief, Musculoskeletal Radiology, UCLA Department of Radiological Sciences. Both had very impressive CVs and were excellent speakers – both in delivery as well as content of their lectures.

Topics covered by Professor Kucharczyk were: The Pituitary Gland, Sella Turcica & Central Skull Base; Myelopathy; Eavaluting the patient with dementia and Central Nervous System Vascular Malformations and Fistulae. Walter was in Kuala Lumpur 15 years ago and in this visit, he would also be climbing Malaysia’s Mount Kinabalu in Sabah!

Professor Seeger spoke on musculoskeletal tumours (bone and soft tissue); MRI of the bone marrow and MR arthrography (hip and shoulder). She gave her experience on the finer points in arriving at the diagnosis and pitfalls one would encounter especially on MR of the bone marrow.

The event was organised by the College of Radiology and sponsored by Siemens Medical and carried 3 CME points under category 1c (a) of the Malaysian Medical Association – Malaysian Medical Council CME system.
