Malaysian Radiologists Shine at the 7th Asian Oceania Society of Pediatric Radiology (AOSPR) Congress, Indonesia – 8-10 Nov 2007

by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azian Abd. Aziz, IIUM, Kuantan, Pahang

Some members of the Organising Committee all dressed pretty in pink with Dr Azian and Datin Dr Sazilah, delegates from Malaysia

The 7th Asian Oceania Society of Pediatric Radiology (AOSPR) Congress 2007 which was held in Hotel Papandayan, Bandung, Indonesia from 8 – 10 November saw Malaysia represented by a commendable number of delegates ....well … there were nine of us to be exact. Not only that we represented the highest number of delegates after the host country, we took home 4 of the main prizes offered which included:

1st prize Quiz winner - Dr. Kew Thean Yean, Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia

1st prize Poster - Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azian Abdul Aziz, International Islamic University Malaysia

2nd prize Poster - Prof. Zulfiqar Anuar, Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia

2nd prize Oral Paper Presentation - Assoc. Prof. Datin Dr. Sazilah Ahmad Sarji, University Malaya

The other delegates from Malaysia was Dr. Idrus, Dr. Rozalina, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ruziah, Dr. Hamzaini Abdul Hamid and Dr. Amran Abdul Rahman.

There were about 250 participants and delegates came from as far as South Africa and USA. Others came from Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Philippines and Singapore and we had a very good opportunity to interact and exchange ideas with the other foreign delegates.

This Congress was held in conjunction with the 1st Congress of the Indonesian Pediatric Radiology Society and various interesting topics (under the subheadings of Emergency Imaging in Children, Neuroimaging and Abdominal Pediatric Imaging) were presented and discussed by excellent international speakers, which among others includedProf Raybaud (Toronto), Prof. Blickman (Netherlands), Dr. Babyn (Toronto), Prof. Albert Lam (Sydney), and Prof. In-One Kim (Seoul).

Apart from the good lectures we were overwhelmed by the hospitality accorded by the organising committee, some of whom were medical students. The Congress dinner was fun and we laughed our hearts out when all the international speakers were ushered to the dance floor to perform the Javanese and other folk dances. In fact some of the Malaysian participants could not resist the excitement and ended up joining them!

The Congress aside, Bandung is indeed an interesting city not only for its touristy places but mainly for its factory outlets (even folks from the other parts of Indonesia come here to shop at the various factory outlets). All in all, we enjoyed both the AOSPR Congress and Bandung. Hope the next AOSPR 2008 in Cambodia will be as interesting!
