Our patient briefings explain a variety of diagnostic procedures and treatments, how patients should prepare for them, and what patients can expect to experience during and after the procedure. These briefings are provided as a service to help patients address their medical care with less anxiety and greater comfort.

From the President's desk.....

Seasons’ Greetings and Welcome 2008!
This time of the year is usually a time of reflection and for making new year resolutions! It is also a time for tying up loose ends (if we can), spending some time relaxing, catching up with friends and family and doing what Malaysians are great at, eating, eating and eating!

The Year That Was...and what’s in store for 2008

  1. The National Specialist Register (NSR) has made some progress and registrations have been received. Specialist Committees have been set up and appointed by the Ministry of Health. The last message conveyed was the need to make this a statutory requirement and hopefully we can see this materialise in 2008.

  2. The Nuclear Medicine Specialty is considered as a separate specialty in the NSR. Discussions amongst the Academy of Medicine and also with our counterparts in Singapore and Hong Kong were held to determine how to start this up as a section or faculty within the College of Radiology (CoR) or College of Physicians. It is very likely that our full time nuclear medicine specialists (either from the route of medicine or radiology) will “settle” into a subsection or faculty of the CoR. There is already a nuclear medicine specialist committee for the NSR with representatives from the Ministry of Health (MOH) and Academy of Medicine (AMM).

  3. Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is in! Still in the developmental stage, it will become reality as both the MOH and AMM are serious about the need to govern ourselves (as in our own profession) in a more measurable way and that will act to build some confidence in the public. In the meantime, the Continuous Medical Education (CME) activities are not mandatory for some medical disciplines and not everyone is registered with the Malaysian Medical Council - CPD scheme that is run by the Malaysian Medical Association. This is already in its 13th Session since 1996. If you have not been updating yourself in the various aspects of professional development, it’s time to start!

  4. Quality Assurance Programmes: The CoR is collaborating with its counterparts in the MOH to draw up QAP for various fields in Radiology.

Scientific/CPD Programmes
2008 kicks off with the Bayer Schering-Siemens Training in Advances in Radiology(STAR) programme on 19-20 Jan 2008.

The 31st CoR AGM and Scientific Meeting will be held parallel with the 8th Asia Pacific Congress of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology, 9-12 June 2008. There will be something for all, as the programme for the CoR meeting will be relevant to all practising radiologists. Oncologists won’t be left out as the scientific programme of the APCCVIR includes onco-intervention.

Check our Events Calendar for the latest updates!

Emerging Technologies, Turfs, Reinvented Technologies etc...

There is no doubt, we will continue to be bombarded with new equipment or re-invented technologies but good sense must prevail. We should not hop on any bandwagon, and promote technologies that are not yet proven adequately. Beware, as it is more dangerous giving false reassurance and false hope to the public. After all, the patient’s well being and best interest should always be our focus.

CoR Mammogram Programme, Breast Health Awareness Programmes and Radiology Malaysia Website contest
The CMP will carry on in 2008 thanks to the donations of generous corporates. The Estee Lauder Group of Companies has pledged RM 100,000 from its Charity Gala Dinner on 7 November 2007 to the CoR’s Mammogram Programmes. This will be music to the ears of our collaborators in Segamat, Johor and other targeted CMP service areas.

We have already benefitted some 300 women from Segamat and the area surrounding it. This time we we able to help fund transport fees to the UIA Breast Centre in Kuantan.

Spread the news about the 2007 Radiology Malaysia-The Kidz Challenge, themed on “what cancer means to me”. It is a contest to evoke interest in the website and yet, bring awareness that cancer should not be a taboo word. This contest is easy, as it involves pouring out your creativity into a collage and it began on 1 Dec 2007 and will end on 31 Mar 2008.

Thank you
As always, the CoR does not exist as an island. The activities it promotes, encourages and collaborations it forges are only possible because of other organisations, friends and members. As a TEAM, everyone achieves more!

So let’s all take up the challenge to ensure our allied professions will keep abreast and stay relevant in very challenging times for the healthcare profession. Let’s also be able to change where needed to improve healthcare delivery and services to our patients.
