Palliative Care & Support Groups

iagnosis with cancer is just the beginning of a journey that can be made much more bearable with the existence of palliative care groups, support groups and counseling centres. The caregivers of those with cancer also need support, encouragement and should not be forgotten.

MyStory:CeritaKu
Lessons to learn from caregivers, friends, colleagues and those with cancer!

The following are highly inspirational accounts which were submitted for the 2005 Radiology Malaysia-Meditel MyStory:CeritaKu contest. They were written with the intention of sharing information, experiences and lessons to help those dealing with cancer and those who are trying to come to terms with a diagnosis of cancer in their loved ones, colleague or friends!

Neuroendocrine Tumour Website
Neuroendocrine Tumors (NETs) is the umbrella term for a group of unusual, often slow-growing cancers, which develop from cells in the diffuse endocrine system. They are found most commonly in the lung or gastrointestinal system, but they can also originate in other parts of the body such as the pancreas, ovary, and testes, among other sites.

World NET Cancer Awareness Day was first celebrated on 10 November 2010.

A Brush With Life – By Teh Siew Lin
Teh Siew Lin has never had problems with words, but expressing herself in watercolour was definitely a novel experience for her. At the height of her professional career as a Chartered Accountant she was diagnosed with cancer. She found herself on new ground with this book. "A Brush With Life" started off as a collection of Siew Lin's "hobby-paintings” over two years. It evolved into this publication, which reflected her very personal journey. Siew Lin was diagnosed with fourth-stage kidney cancer (it had spread to her lungs) in July 2000. The purpose of this book is not to highlight the pain of cancer but to tell her story of how adversity can lead one to discover new and refreshing experiences. Teh Siew Lin passed away on 1 May 2009 in Kuala Lumpur.

Cancer Guide: A Resource for Patients and Loved Ones
Angela Lanza dedicated her whole nursing career to cancer patients and families. She says, “I have been blessed in knowing many loving and courageous people. Caring for these special people has given me real experiences that no text book could ever teach. I have seen how patients and families struggle through diagnosis, treatment, and successes and failures of having cancer. I don't claim to know everything about cancer, but I would like to share my knowledge, experiences, and feelings with others to help make the journey easier.”
