International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Calls for Enhanced Radiation Protection of Patients

Advances in medical imaging techniques are allowing doctors to detect hidden diseases and make ever more accurate diagnoses. But radiation safety experts at the IAEA say that overuse of high-tech scanning procedures may unnecessarily expose patients to increased radiation levels.

The College of Radiology – Alliance for Radiation Safety in Paediatric Imaging & the Image Gently Campaign

In 2008, the CoR-Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, joined the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging, a coalition of 34 healthcare organisations serving over 400,000 healthcare providers worldwide. The Alliance goal is simple: to raise awareness of opportunities to lower radiation dose used in pediatric imaging examinations through its informational “Image Gently” campaign.

Materials to help educate parents about medical imaging and to help them track their child’s past imaging exams: “MY Child’s Medical Imaging Record” and “What Parents Should Know About CT Scans for Children”, including Paediatric CT protocol guidance and worksheet, including other resources are downloadable at www.imagegently.org

This manual gives QAP procedures that are in addition to the general regulatory requirements. QAP in mammography is vital because mammography is technically one of the most demanding radiological investigations and consistently high quality mammograms are essential.  Poor quality mammogram will lead to mistaken diagnosis and increased number of inappropriate biopsies.
