Background Information

The Perak Palliative Care Society (PPCS) is a non-governmental, non-profit, non-religious society formed in October 1994. In February 1995, PPCS was registered as a charitable society.

Role of the PPCS
1. To promote awareness of Palliative Care in the community
2. To advocate for better services for the terminally ill
3. To advocate for better education and training opportunities for health care providers
4. To promote the spirit of volunteerism
5. To provide Palliative Care services

The Perak Palliative Care Centre
In 1997 the Perak Chinese Maternity Hospital gave the Society a space within the premises of the hospital to set up the Centre. The Centre now occupies new premises at Jalan Lasam in Ipoh. Their website presence was established in 2004.

PPCS Programmes

The Home Care Program
The Home Care Program started in June 1995 with the employment of 2 nurses initially to form a team with the volunteer doctors and lay volunteers. Today the program is managed by 2 full time nurses, one part time nurse and a full time Centre Coordinator supported by a group of volunteers which include doctors, and lay people. The service provided is free but clients have to buy their own medication. Limited number of equipment like commodes, wheelchairs, oxygen concentrators are available on loan to clients. Due to our constraints in human and financial resources we have to impose the following criteria for admission into the Program.

Patients referred to the Home Care Program must have -

1. A diagnosis of Cancer which is no longer responsive to curative treatment

2. Agreed to be referred

3. A Care-giver at home

4. Live within 20km from PPCC. (This criteria was added in August 1998)

The Volunteers of PPCS

Volunteers are a very big component of PPCS which is a society initiated, formed and managed by volunteers. Volunteers can serve in various ways. They can join existing groups with special functions or contribute their services whenever required and when they are able to. At present the groups which volunteers can join are:

1. As members of the various subcommittees

2. The Patchwork Gang which comprises a group of ladies who meet every Wednesday afternoon to do handicrafts for sale to raise funds for the Society

3. The Buzz gang which comprises a group of people who have working commitment during office hours and meet once a month to help in the work of CARE

4. The Office Gang which help in the office

5. The Client Support Volunteers who assist the nurses in the care of our clients in the Home Care Programme

6. The PCU volunteers who visit patients in the Palliative Care Unit of the Ipoh Hospital
