“A Novel Approach of Gastrointestinal Transit Investigation Using SPECT and MR Image Fusion” Scientific Paper Wins Certificate of Merit at the ECR 2012, Vienna – March 2012

By Dr Evelyn Ho

Malaysian medical physicist, Chai-Hong Yeong, reading her doctorate in medical physics at the Department of Biomedical Imaging, Faculty of Medicine, University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur has won a Certificate of Merit for the scientific paper submitted to the 2012 European Congress of Radiology (ECR) for which she was lead author. The scientific paper was “A Novel Approach of Gastrointestinal Transit Investigation Using SPECT and MR Image Fusion”.

The purpose of the paper was to demonstrate the feasibility of SPECT and MR image fusions for improving the diagnosis of regional abnormalities in whole gastrointestinal (GI) transit. It was found that the image fusion with sequential gamma images improves the assessment of segmental GI transit by facilitating accurate delineation of tracer anatomically.

In this year’s ECR 2012, there were over 2,500 new scientific and educational exhibits and scientific paper presentations. Prof Dr KH Ng, the founder of the medical physics unit within the Biomedical Imaging Department in the Faculty of Medicine and also Chai-Hong’s mentor, said, “The ECR is a prestigious congress and recognised as one of the leading radiological congresses in the world. Having one of our submitted papers win an award is testimony to our quality work and puts Malaysia on the map! This is also a result of a very fruitful collaboration between University Malaya and Professor Alan Perkins of the University of Nottingham. We have every reason to be proud of this achievement.”

Naturally Chai-Hong was delighted at this award.

The College of Radiology congratulates Chai-Hong and her co-authors.

Scientific Exhibition Awards
An independent jury of European radiologists judge all scientific and educational exhibits with regard to their scientific content, educational value, originality and visual impression. Taking advantage of EPOS™, the rating was carried out online, prior to the congress, enabling a detailed and considered assessment. On this basis, the scientific exhibition committee awarded the following prizes to the best posters:
• 6 Magna Cum Laude
• 10 Cum Laude
• 17 Certificate of Merit

Each of the Magna Cum Laude award winners was presented a certificate and free ECR 2013 registration. Award winners of the Cum Laude and Certificate of Merit award were given a certificate and a small gift. All award winning posters are flagged in EPOS™ and will be published on the ESR website and on myESR.org/epos
