2012 College of Radiology (CoR) and Malaysian Society of Radiographers (MSR) Joint Scientific Meeting, Penang

The Annual Scientific Meeting of the CoR was held in Equatorial Hotel, Penang and for the first time, it was a joint meeting with the Malaysian Society of Radiographers. There was a whopping 401 participants at the meeting. The faculty consisted of foreign and local speakers. There was also a Fellowship/Masters (Radiology) tutorial series. The pre-congress programme consisted of seminars in Head & Neck, Paediatrics, Musculoskeletal, Body Imaging and Interventional Radiology.

CoR Meet the Expert Event Proves Exciting: Image Fusion and Contrast Enhanced Ultrasound – The New Tools in Interventional Ultrasound, Kuala Lumpur

The College of Radiology organised a “Meet the Expert” event at Sunway Putra Hotel, Kuala Lumpur where Dr Christian Pállson Nolsøe from Denmark spoke on Image Fusion and Contrast Enhanced Ultrasound – The New Tools in Interventional Ultrasound. Dr Nolsøe also did a live demonstration of how he used volume navigation image fusion and GPS on the LOGIQ® E9 ultrasound unit.

“A Novel Approach of Gastrointestinal Transit Investigation Using SPECT and MR Image Fusion” Scientific Paper Wins Certificate of Merit at the ECR 2012, Vienna

Malaysian medical physicist, Chai-Hong Yeong, reading her doctorate in medical physics at the Department of Biomedical Imaging, Faculty of Medicine, University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur has won a Certificate of Merit for the scientific paper submitted to the 2012 European Congress of Radiology for which she was lead author. The scientific paper was “A Novel Approach of Gastrointestinal Transit Investigation Using SPECT and MR Image Fusion”. Congratulations to Chai-Hong and her co-authors

First Asian Symposium on Breast Density, University Malaya Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur

The University Malaya Cancer Research Institute (UMCRi) in collaboration with the Biomedical Imaging Department of the University of Malaya organised the First Asian Symposium on Breast Density. Despite scientific publications showing the link between dense breasts on mammograms and the increased risk of breast cancer over the years (from 1976), it was only as recent as 2010 before it was widely accepted as an independent risk factor for breast cancer.

The 21st Annual Scientific Meeting of the Singapore Radiological Society and the College of Radiologists, Singapore – Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore.

The theme of the meeting was “Breast and Thoracic Imaging: Where do we go from here?”. This meeting was well attended with an invited faculty of local and international speakers. Prof Shih-Chang Wang delivered the FY Khoo Lecture. His lecture entitled ‘Why Radiology Needs Philosophy” was intriguing with analogies made between philosophy and the practice of radiology. The meeting was preceded by a pre-congress workshop on Diagnostic Radiology Residency: Train the Trainers Workshop as well as breast and thoracic categorical sessions. Congratulations to Drs Richard Yeo and Gervais Wansaicheong and their organising committee on this successful meeting.

Seminar on Health Sector Reform and Financial Sustainability, Kuala Lumpur

The Ministry of Health, Malaysia in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, organised a 1-day seminar on Health Sector Reform and Financial Sustainability at the Institute for Health Management in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. The 2 speakers were Prof Peter Berman, PhD (Public Policy) from Harvard School of Public Health and Paul Shaw, PhD (Economics).

College of Radiology’s Breast Seminar Goes East to Kota Kinabalu

In line with the College of Radiology’s (CoR) maxim to elevate and maintain the quality of mammograms and their interpretation, the annual breast meeting primarily to provide Malaysian radiologists, radiographers and medical physicists an opportunity to update, get training support and network went East, specifically to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, East Malaysia. There were 190 participants, nearly double that expected and for the radiographers’ hands-on workshops held in Hospital Likas and Hospital Queen Elizabeth II, there were 55 per hospital..

The 11th Asian & Oceanic Society of Paediatric Radiology (AOSPR) Congress in conjunction with the 3rd National Congress of Indonesian Society of Paediatric Radiology (PDSRAI), Bali, Indonesia

The 67th Korean Congress of Radiology, Seoul, Korea & the AOSR Council Meets at the KCR2011

The Asian Oceanian Congress of Radiology (AOSR) Executive Council held a meeting facilitated and hosted by the Korean Society of Radiology (KSR) at the 67th Korean Congress of Radiology (KCR2011) in late October 2011. This year’s KCR 2011 was an outstanding success with at least 70% of the congress being conducted in English. There were 2,629 participants and 59 exhibitors at the Trade Exhibition.

Announcement: Dr Beena Devi, the First Recipient of the Prestigious Paul Calabresi Award outside of Europe or the USA, Paris (France)

The College of Radiology again congratulates Dr. Beena Devi for being selected for the Paul Calabresi award for 2011 by the International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG). SIOG is a professional oncology society based in Genolier, Switzerland championing the course of treatment of cancer in the elderly. This year its 11th annual meeting will be held on 4-5 of October in Paris, France. During this auspicious occasion a prominent world expert in the field of Geriatric Oncology will receive the Paul Calabresi Award, named after its first president: Dr Paul Calabresi.
