The President’s 2012 Message:
I extend a warm New Year greeting to all Members of the College of Radiology, and Fellows of the Academy of Medicine Malaysia. As new 2012 calendars are unfurled and the year of the Dragon looms ahead, many are reassessing the previous year’s records and performance, and planning ahead for the New Year. It is the same for the Council of the College of Radiology (CoR). The first 2012 Council meeting was held on the first Saturday of the year.
Looking back on year 2011, some events should be highlighted. The CoR Council met seven times in the year, planning and streamlining College events. The CoR was able to make strides into new territory. For the first time, two CoR events were successfully organised in East Malaysia. CoR acknowledges that there are members living and working in East Malaysia who may have found it difficult to attend College events held in Peninsular Malaysia. Thus the CoR 2011 Annual General Meeting was held in Kuching, Sarawak in May, and the 2011 Breast Seminar in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah in December. Both events were well attended. They provided a great opportunity for CoR Council members and the Executive Secretary to meet the radiologists in East Malaysia, to update them on new developments and in turn be informed of their points of view and professional concerns. Another 2011 highlight was the Annual Scientific Meeting held on 8-10 April, which featured three RSNA International Visiting Professors. The lectures given by them and other Faculty members were well received by the 330 registered participants. Senior College members were able to make professional contact with them for the benefit of their trainees and young radiologists interested in subspecialty training in the different radiological disciplines. An Oncologic Seminar was held on Wesak Day public holiday, organised by the College to coincide with a home visit by Dr Ng Chaan, a Malaysian-born radiologist. He is now serving at the MD Anderson Cancer Centre in Houston, USA, and welcomed the opportunity to share his knowledge and experience with us. Doubtless we were even happier to have him; and as such have invited him to be on the Faculty of the CoR’s 2012 Annual Scientific meeting.
The College was represented at several overseas events in 2011. These include the following: The 15th Congress of the Asean Association of Radiology (Singapore, 18-21 May 2011) The 45th Annual Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine (Singapore, 21-23 July 2011) The 4th Joint Scientific Meeting of the RCR and the HKCR, coinciding with the 19th ASM of the HKCR, and the induction of new Fellows (Hong Kong, 29-30 October 2011) The AOSR Executive Committee meeting (Seoul, 27-29 October 2011)
Year after year the CoR has benefited from the Estee Lauder Breast Cancer Awareness and fund-raising campaigns. The CoR is one of the recipients of the funds raised in the campaign; and it uses the donation received to subsidise mammography in low income women in CoR accredited centres in the country. A full report on this activity is available on the CoR Breast Health Information Centre. The CoR Council is currently busy with preparations for activities being organised for 2012. Some important up-coming events and dates are as follows: The CoR Annual Scientific Meeting 2012 (Penang Equatorial Hotel, 30 March-1 April), with the theme “Cancer Imaging” The CoR Annual General Meeting 2012 (Kuala Lumpur, proposed date June). A Radiation Protection Seminar is planned in conjunction with the AGM, as was the case with the 2011 AGM. It is hoped that members do their very best to attend as this is an election year. Please do keep in touch with the CoR website and secretariat. Annual Breast Seminar (planned for October). PRIDE has expressed an interest to co-organise a Survivor event in conjunction with this seminar. Tutorials for Master Radiology trainees are expected to soon be held at weekends, to help prepare them for the May 2012 exams. A Panel of CoR Tutors will be formed by the co-ordinators Dr Josephine Subramaniam and Dato’ Dr Abdul Samad Sakijan. The College is now represented at the Radiology Conjoint meetings, and has been invited to play a bigger role in academic training, befitting its position as one of the medical Colleges under the Academy of Medicine Malaysia.
The Special Interest Groups have been established to guide new radiologists to choose a subspecialty area should they wish to do so. Presently there are eight SIGs, and should the membership of any of these groups grow large enough, the CoR may be advised by AMM Council of the National Specialist Register (NSR) to have it listed as a Radiology Subspecialty under the NSR. Much work needs to be done, and I am indebted to the 2010-2012 CoR Council members for volunteering their time, ideas and efforts towards building the CoR stature as a member College of the Academy of Medicine Malaysia (AMM). The CoR is currently represented on the AMM Council by the President and the Immediate Past President. The AMM has been entrusted to play a key role in decision-making relating to all matters affecting medical specialists in the country, and this role is ever-expanding and will soon be extended to managing the NSR and CPD matters. Finally I wish that all CoR members, and readers of the CoR website will have a successful and fulfilling year ahead.
Thank you.
