Early Detection of Breast Cancer and Self Breast Examination Workshop at the Ministry of Women and Family Development, 2 July 2002

The workshop began just after 9am to a very attentive audience. Puan Norasmah Samsudin, the Director of the Department of Women Development was there to lend her support.

There was a handful of (brave) men at this workshop focused on self breast examination as one of the tools for early detection of breast cancer. Here they learnt that breast cancer does occur in men and although rare (compared to women), the incidence of breast cancer in men was also increasing.

Dr Evelyn Ho put all participants of the workshop through the steps needed when observing and looking for changes in the breast. The audience had a good time doing their “aerobics” for the morning!

Encik Ali was very sporting indeed to volunteer for demonstration of the technique for lying down to examine the breasts.

On hand to support the event was the Breast Cancer Welfare Association and Prof Dr Siti Hajar shared her experiences in her fight against breast cancer.

After a short Q & A session, the audience was invited to try out their newly taught skills on silicon breast models.

Refreshments were served and Puan Norasmah presented souvenirs to Dr Evelyn Ho, Dr Siti Hajar and Mrs June Yeoh, President of the YCWA for enabling this workshop.
