Self Breast Examination Workshop for Trainers and Facilitators – 13 July 2002

Participants at the registration counter

A special Self Breast Examination (SBE) workshop was held on the afternoon of 13 July 2002 for a total of 34 participants.  These participants included those in an SBE teaching programme, facilitators or instructors. They came from as far north as Kedah and as far south as Seremban, Negeri Sembilan! The group was made up of a doctor, nurses/sisters, clinic assistants, volunteers and breast cancer survivors. Originally meant for a small group of 20, it had to be expanded to accommodate the requests that more be included in this workshop. There were nurses from two factories, Colgate Palmolive (M) Sdn Bhd as well as Kuala Lumpur Glass Manufacturers Sdn Bhd.

Such was the commitment of these participants towards the cause of fighting breast cancer. The main organizers was the College of Radiology and the NCWO with support from Johnson & Johnson, Megah Medical Specialists Group, Meditel Electronics, Breast Cancer Welfare Association and Micronet Solutions Sdn Bhd. Dr Evelyn Ho conducted the workshop.

The topics for the afternoon included some background information on Breast Cancer relevant to the need for SBE, the issues to be dealt with for effective SBE instruction as well as the tools and technique of SBE instruction as well. A “Live” demonstration using volunteers from the participants was done as well as a hands-on session using Teaching Breast Models were also part of the programme.

A personal computer was provided to enable participants to view the Breast Health Info Centre, www.radiologymalaysia.org/breasthealth as well as to try their hand on what was available on the website.

Downloadable resources have been placed on the website to facilitate other centres holding their own SBE programmes. The website is the effort of the College of Radiology, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia and is the e-learning arm of the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign.

The group was also informed of the complementary activity to SBE and that would be the Subsidised Mammogram Programme, planned for October – the International Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Each organization was given a “starter” pack for their own campaign, made up of posters, pamphlets, door knobs and breast care recorders as well as instructions for the use of some of the Teaching Breast Models demonstrated. A variety of extra pamphlets, magnets of the NCWO 2002 BCAC as well as posters were available for participants to take back to their respective centres in the other states.

Feedback from the participants was most encouraging and the session ended with of course, tea – Malaysian-style! About 80% of the participants declared they would be able to conduct an SBE training workshop fairly confidently after the workshop. The aim of the workshop was thus achieved.
