25 April 2003

On a very bright and sunny day, YB Dato’ Chua Jui Meng, Health Minister of Malaysia and Yang Amat Berbahagia Datin Paduka Seri Endon Mahmood, wife of Acting Prime Minister of Malaysia arrived within minutes of each other to attend the Avon Malaysia MammotomeTM presentation to Putrajaya Hospital.

The event started on time with a speech by President of Avon Malaysia, Mr Gérman Martinez Corral. He spoke on the “dream to Kiss Goodbye to Cancer” a reality. Avon had pledged RM250,000 towards mammogram subsidies for underserved women and to obtain a MammotomeTM for the Putrajaya Hospital in 2002. YB Dato’ Chua engaged the audience with amusing anecdotes even whilst addressing the seriousness of breast cancer in Malaysia. He was happy to know that corporates such as Avon Malaysia was contributing to early detection of breast cancer with the presentation of the MammotomeTM Breast Biopsy System to Putrajaya Hospital. This biopsy system is able to perform a minimally invasive breast biopsy within an office setting using only local anaesthesia. The sample of biopsy tissue taken is larger than with the normal fine needle biopsy procedure. This allows more accurate pathological diagnosis.

Guests were treated to an audiovisual presentation outlining the efforts of the Kiss Goodbye to Breast Cancer Campaign taking place simultaneously in 47 countries in the world. Ms Erra Fazira was present in her capacity as Avon Malaysia’ Beauty Ambassador.

YB Dato’ Chua Jui Meng, Yg Amat Berbahagia Datin Paduka Seri Endon Mahmood and Mr German Martinez Corral took part in a ribbon cutting ceremony on stage as a symbolic gesture of accepting the MammotomeTM on behalf of Putrajaya Hospital. This also signaled the end of the morning’s event.
