Ang Merlin, Tay Kim Yam and Irene Ang win Grand Prizes in the Radiology Malaysia Champ Quiz 2003 – 28 Oct 2003

28 October saw the congregation of prize winners of the Radiology Malaysia Champ Quiz 2003. The online quiz was held to encourage all to surf, learn and perhaps win something in the process of getting to know the website, www.radiologymalaysia.org. This website is the electronic arm of the College of Radiology’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign and is also the official homepage of the College of Radiology, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia.

Present to officiate at this event was YB Datuk Amar Leo Moggie, Minister of Energy, Telecommunications and Multimedia. The short and sweet prize presentation was held at Cititel, Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur. The event was made possible by the principal sponsor of the Online Quiz - Meditel Electronics Sdn Bhd. Meditel has been a significant sponsor to the College’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign activities since 2001.

Ong Wei Wei wins the overall Best Design prize.

In addition to the prize presentation for the RM Champ Quiz 2003, prizes for the Creative Design Competition, co-organised with the Dasein Academy of Art were also given out. The overall best design winner was Ms Ong Wei Wei, who won a pewter trophy and a Meal voucher for 6 at Sri Nyonya Restaurant. Ms Ong is a 3rd year student at Dasein Academy of Art, and is majoring in graphics design. Ms Tee Chee Yee won a trophy and certificate for the Best Chinese Language Design.

Volunteers from the Breast Cancer Welfare Association demonstrated the sewing of microfibre external prosthesis for use in the normal brassiere after surgery for removal of the breasts. A station for teaching of self breast examination and breast health awareness was also on display and manned by Rosa Ho, a volunteer from Johnson & Johnson – the College’s partner in the breast health education arm of the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign.

Other sponsors who made the contests possible with attractive prizes were: Microsoft Malaysia, Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur, Crony Lingerie, Abex Medical System, GE Medical Systems, SecuMedi, Richmatt Holdings, Integrity Micro Distributors, Osim Malaysia, Abbott Laboratories, Sri Nyonya Restaurant. Agfa Asean has also been one of the supporters of the website. Radiology Malaysia supports all contributions, large and small to help it sustain a growing website.

Nutritionist Ms Ang Merlin won the Grand Prize of Australia’s Gold Coast Holiday for two

Ang Merlin shares with us, “I took almost half a day (solid hours) sitting in front of the computer surfing through the website searching for the answers. I almost gave up, but I guess my perseverance finally prevailed. I've really learnt so much in the whole process. And of course the learning process was made much sweeter as I was surprisedly announced as the Grand Prize winner!”

Second Grand Prize Winner, Madam Tay writes: “I first knew about the contest when my son told me about the website and asked me to surf to gain some insight regarding breast cancer. I was still new to the internet and my son had to guide me. I learned a lot of facts and removed a lot of fears by reading the enlightening articles on the website. Taking part in the contest also forced me to read and explore the website more and I have no regrets since I gained a lot of knowledge and understanding. My sons who surfed the internet also learned a lot. I am very impressed with the layout of the website and the dedication shown to disperse knowledge through the internet. It must have taken a lot of time to put this website up!

Madam Tay Kim Yam from Malacca won the Grand Prize 2 and promptly filled up her car (her sons drove her to the prize presentation) with the IT goodies!

Helen Wong, one of our consolation prize winners with her ardent supporter, Mr Billy Ong!

What I was surprised was that I was the only senior citizen among the list of winners. The others were young ladies who I don't think belong to the "high risk" group for breast cancer. Maybe more should be done to reach out to the group that matters...the high risk people. Anyway, I guess the young ladies may help to pass on what they have learned to their elder relatives, aunts or mothers. But it would still be good exposure for them for later on when they get into the high risk group.”

Here is Helen’s feedback: “The questionnaires this year were indeed tough. Of course the grand prize was the "carrot" but the knowledge gained makes it worth my effort. Next time I need not really fear a little exposure to radiation i.e if the view known as Hormesis is right :)

My husband says everybody was nice & pleasant so he did not feel out of place (you know guys! - always thinking breast health awareness is meant only for women).

I was surprised to see some breast cancer survivors present at the event & they looked well & cheerful (I didn't know at first until one or two shared their experience)”.

Excerpts of comments from The Lews:
“ Honestly, we didn't expect to win anything from here. Just trying our luck to be one of the lucky early birds. The questions were pretty difficult. We had to spend time browsing the website for the answers. Yet it was fun as the information here was enlightening for newbies like us. We were surprised when we were also announced as the lucky consolation prize winners as we expected tough competition from the public……

Thank you all (Editor and Radiology Malaysia contributors) - for this website and its information. Without it, we might still be ignorant of this FEAR or even the courage to face IT.

Our hope for this website goes beyond Tun Dr Mahathir’s Wawasan 2020 for the benefit of the coming generations.”
