Breast Health Workshop at the Vocational Opportunity Training Centre (VOTC) in YWCA, Kuala Lumpur – 26 November 2003 65 ladies (the majority in their early twenties) at the Vocational Opportunity Training Centre participated in a breast health workshop. This workshop was completely different from their usual classes and aimed at inculcating the right attitudes and motivation towards being aware of their breasts. The workshop was conducted in both English and Bahasa Malaysia.
Participants at the VOTC included those from Sabah, Pahang, Terengganu, Johor, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Kedah and Kelantan.
The interactive workshop managed to get very positive responses and unlike workshops for more mature ladies, was unfettered by fears and information or rather sometimes “mis-information” received through the years from friends, family and colleagues.
The ladies participated in activities and provided answers through group think-tank sessions. Time just flew even though, the workshop lasted 3.5 hours! This was a great way to spend their holiday break while empowering themselves with breast health awareness information. About 90% of them felt they have benefited from the workshop and a few even wanted more information! Items sponsored by Microsoft Malaysia, Anakku and Meditel Electronics provided small rewards for their active participation and contribution to the workshop.
This workshop was made possible by Mrs June Yeoh, the Breast Cancer Awareness Coordinator for the National Council of Women’s Organisations. She is also in charge of the Poverty Commission and is the National President of the YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association). Dr Evelyn Ho, of the College of Radiology conducted the workshop while Mr Francis Lee was the technical support expert and photographer for the session.
