| OutRageously PiNk Nite – Living It Up, Bangsar Cares! 11 June 2004 By Dr Evelyn Ho Bangsar Baru Business District was host to a celebration for Breast Health Awareness on Friday evening, 11 June 2004. Breast cancer survivors, supporters, friends and many others came in creative pink (use of tinsel, mock pink fur, garlands and scarves were evident amongst the more daring!) thronged the streets of the Bangsar Baru Business District. The weather could not be better on 11 June 2004 for OutRageously PINK Nite.
Roving clowns entertained the crowd from 7.30pm and families were seen in a variety of pink wear in Bangsar Baru. Even babies were dressed in pink for the night and got “spotted”! The 1st Kuala Lumpur Boys’ Brigade Band performed from 8pm to 8.50pm, and made their rounds around the business block between Telawi 2 and 3. YB Dato’ Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Minister of Women, Family and Community Development arrived at 9pm and the band played fanfare to greet her arrival.
Street salsa by Havana Estudio then got the crowd really into the party mood and some joined the professional dancers! Face painting and stamp tattoo stands were also busy that night, particularly the stamp tattoo stall which was still busy after midnight. Pink tattoos were evident on cheeks, foreheads, chests, cleavage, shoulders, arms and the back!
At 10.30pm, Mr Muscles contest took place at Bar Flam. There were 6 brave male contestants! Read more about the Mr Muscles Contest here. Some 3,000 goodie bags with educational leaflets and freebies were handed out that night to the public on the street, and even the working staff that night! Juwito Suwito’s debut CD was also available for a donation. All in all, it was a fun night for volunteers as well as the public (we hope) and all for a good cause to raise breast health awareness in a fun way. We thank everyone that gave generously on that night as well as all our partners in awareness for making it a success! The event was organised by the Malaysian Breast Cancer Council (MBCC). Check out how OPN was painstakingly put together in The Making of OPN. Breast cancer survivors and volunteers from the member organisations of the MBCC turned models for the evening of 28 April 2004 in a grueling photoshoot to promote the event. Fanfare to herald OPN 1st Kuala Lumpur Boys’ Brigade Company Brass Band performed from 8pm to 8.50pm to herald the official launch on Friday, 11 June 2004. They performed along Jalan Telawi 2 and 3 and stopped along Jalan Telawi 5 in front of Telawi Street Bistro to await the arrival of YB Dato’ Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil. They greeted her with “fanfare” when she arrived at 9pm.
The Boys’ Brigade (BB) is the first uniformed youth organisation in the world, spreading over 60 countries. Sir William Alexander Smith founded the BB in 1883, modeling it on the concept of drill and discipline. The Boy Scouts’ movement was inspired by the BB. The founder of the Boy Scouts’, Sir Baden Powell was a close friend to Sir William Alexander Smith. | Launch of OPN YB Dato’ Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Minister of Women, Family and Community Development officiate at the launch of the OPN at 9pm at Telawi St Bistro. YB Dato' Seri Sharizat is also the patron of the Malaysian Breast Cancer Council (MBCC) and the OPN was the MBCC's inaugural event. YB Dato’ Seri Shahrizat shook hands with the crowd as she made her way to Telawi Street Bistro. Speeches were short and sweet, and a tribute to all the partners in awareness was included in the launch ceremony. | Stamp tattoo; face painting and purely “clowning” around! It was evident the crowd really had a good time clowning around, getting their face painted or just getting stamped with instant (washable) tattoos!
Those in pink Got spotted! Many came in pink – sometimes whole families tried to get pink as well. What a sight! They were rewarded with either Coffee Bean Vouchers or Tanjong Golden Village movie passes.
| Street Salsa was a hit with the crowd! Havana Estudio showcased authentic Cuban style salsa. Sam & Aisha was a couple to behold while the other accompanying professional dancers really got everyone ready to “salsa” along too! This was their tribute to the hard work of the Malaysian Breast Cancer Council and workers in the fight against cancer. The crowd just adored the professional dancers and some joined in and formed a ring around the dancers!
| Juwita Suwito's debut CD was available on OPN On 18 June 2004, Juwita released her debut solo album produced by sought-after and award-winning producer Aubrey Suwito, under independent record label, Oops! Asia. The ten tracks (five of which were written by Juwita herself) accentuate her life’s experiences and childhood musical influences ranging from R&B to Asian pop, generously sprinkled with her newly developed taste for more pop-rock/urban styles. Prior to its official release, the album was exclusively available at the OutRageously PINK Nite in Bangsar on 11 June 2004. This was Juwita Suwito and Oops!Asia’s contribution to the MBCC's Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. Please click here for more information on Juwita! | Goodie Bags Goodie bags was a much sought after commodity and we hope the public read some of the educational leaflets that were inserted into the bag!
Volunteers walked the Bangsar Baru Business District to distribute them to the “man on the road” and to some of the workers in the food and retail outlets! | OPN Opinion Poll Conducted Amidst the fun and laughter, pollsters were busy on OPN as they had 600 of the public to poll. We thank everyone that cooperated by giving their opinions. Many were taken by surprise at the event as they felt that not enough publicity had been given to an important event such as this.
