Raising Self Breast Awareness – 13 March 2005

14 women attending the Programme Nur: Reach to Recovery Training Workshop for Breast Cancer Survivors & Support Volunteers 11-13 March 2005 stayed for the self breast examination workshop that lasted from 2pm to 6pm on the last day programme. Despite being a Sunday, the question and answer session carried on until 6pm and culminated in a group photograph.

The ladies from Penang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Malacca and Seremban were taken on a tour of the normal human breast, how to understand their breasts, how to observe and feel for changes from their normal as well as the techniques used in the early detection of breast cancer. The Q & A session was lively and a wide variety of questions were asked.

92% felt the workshop had improved their understanding of the breasts and how to perform self breast examination more confidently. 8% felt the workshop was too short and would have preferred a longer hands-on session and a few even suggested “live models” on which to practise self breast examination at future sessions.

Comments from the evaluation forms included:–

  • “Excellent”

  • “There is so much information I have gained”

  • “The Q & A session was particularly useful. I clarified many issues during this session”

  • “Live human models would be great – for the practical session in addition to the teaching silicon models”
