Students of the Vocational Training Centre, YWCA Kuala Lumpur get solid head start to taking charge of their breast health – 8 May 2005

35 girls from Sabah, Sarawak, Perak, Malacca, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan were treated to an interactive, fun workshop on breast health. These young ladies (from underprivileged families) mainly in the age range of 20-30 years of age have been given a chance to develop skills for living in the Vocational Training Centre at the YCWA, Kuala Lumpur. This breast health workshop would add another dimension to their education – that of taking charge of their breast health from young.

They were given an overview of basic facts about their breasts and to learn to detect changes in their breasts in a systematic, non-anxious fashion that should set a firm foundation for a breast aware generation! In addition, they would be able to take home the messages of breast health to their various homes in kampungs, estates and towns. Overcoming the fear of cancer that overrides all commonsense was instilled because most breast problems were non-cancer issues. Yet, fear and ignorance was the greatest deterrence to achieving earlier detection of breast cancer.

It may have been 4 hours of teaching, question & answer, demonstrations and activities – but it flew by fast enough. The workshop was made possible by Dr Evelyn Ho (College of Radiology), Mrs June Yeoh (National Council of Womens’ Organisations), Ms Rosa Ho (Volunteer and also Johnson & Johnson) and Mr Francis Lee (Volunteer, IT Support/Photography).
