How to be Self Breast Aware? – 6 Aug 2005

It was another Saturday afternoon workshop at J & J Medical, Wisma Zuellig in Petaling Jaya. There were about 35 participants and the session kicked off with 4 volunteers acting out a skit. The workshop was conducted by Dr Evelyn Ho with the assistance of Mrs June Yeoh of the National Council of Women’s Organisations, Soo Jok Hua and Jessica Lau from the Breast Cancer Welfare Association, Rosa Ho from J & J Medical and Dr Violet How.

The interactive workshop was an eye opener for many with the revelation of basic breast health facts and was an avenue for questions on various stories, myths as well as sharing of experiences.

The workshop participants were treated to home-cooked food courtesy of Dr Violet How and Hooi Yin.

Although only about 60% felt they could teach self breast examination to others, almost everyone felt they had dramatically increased their understanding of breast health by the end of the workshop. Most found the hands on and practical sessions useful.


 

NCR 2003 Report: Breast Cancer is still the top cancer amongst women

Latest statistics from
the National Cancer Registry (NCR) show
that lung cancer is the most common cancer experienced by men in the country, whilst
breast cancer is the top cancer in women. Lung cancer accounts for 13.8 per cent of cancer cases among men. For women, breast cancer accounts
for 31 per cent of cases.
