Walking Pink in KLCC Park – 2 Oct 2005
By Dr Evelyn Ho

As I walked into Suria KLCC from the LRT station, sporting a signature pink ribbon t-shirt designed by renowned Malaysian Designer Michael Ong, I was greeted by a sight of people also in “uniform” all over the place. There was a special bond as our eyes met and recognised that we were here for an event, Walking Pink, organised by the Estee Lauder Companies.

As it was still early, and participants were taking the opportunity to shop, eat or just browse the many stores in Suria KLCC. Participants registered for the walk by paying RM 20 and in return, was given this special pink t-shirt, a glow band and a bottle of water for the walk.

This special “night” WALK kicked off the Estee Lauder Companies Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. The weather was fine despite some drizzling in the late afternoon.

Her Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tuanku Fauziah binti Al-Marhum Tengku Abdul Rashid graced the occasion in support of the cause for “early detection of breast cancer”. She even led the walk, followed by Mr Loo Kai Nan – the Managing Director of Estee Lauder Companies, Ranjit Kaur - President of the Breast Cancer Welfare Association and non profit organisations as well as celebrities and friends.

After the walk, a lucky draw was held with prizes made up of all brands under the Estee Lauder Companies banner, valued at RM 2,000, RM 1,000 and RM 500.

This year’s campaign also include Fund Raisers – the Pink Ribbon Charity Golf (29 Sep 2005), Pink Ribbon Charity Auction (4 Oct 2005) of exclusive kebaya inspiration pieces from top designers (Carven Ong, Eric Choong, Eric Tho, Kapas, Khoon Hooi, Sharifah Kirana and Salabianca). Pink Ribbon Roadshows will run in major malls in the month of October 2005.

In addition, Estee Lauder Companies also runs the Look Good Feel Better fun makeup sessions for breast cancer patients. Contributions for 100 mammograms for under privileged or financially challenged women are also made available at National Cancer Society of Malaysia annually.
