The Guest of Honour, YB Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad viewing the exhibits at the Launch

Audience is all ears during the breast health workshop

BCSS Segamat’s Official Launch, Breast Health Workshop and Charity Dinner & Dance – 6 May 2006
By Maria Kinson, Organising Chairperson of the Event, Vice President of the BCSS Segamat

The official launch of the Breast Cancer Support Society Segamat and the other events to celebrate the 1st year of the BCSS were a great success! The event was graced by Y.B Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad, Deputy Minister of Health of Malaysia. The Segamat District Officer, Tuan Haji Yahaya Mohd Salleh and the Segamat Teochew Association President, Mrs Tang Tong Meng were also present.

During YB Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff’s speech, he gave the assurance that the Ministry of Health would allocate a certain sum of money (yearly grant) to BCSS Segamat to help them carry out their activities. The District Officer, Tuan Haji Yahaya Mohd Salleh, who is also the patron of BCSS, also gave his promise that whatever was within his capacity to help, he would - to ensure the success of BCSS’s efforts.

The hall was filled to capacity with about 300 participants during the day for the “Techniques of Self Breast Examination, Interactive Health Talk and Related Issues in Breast Cancer”. Drs Tiu Cui Chen (Consultant Surgeon of Kempas Medical Centre) and Linayanti Rosli (Medial Officer of Daerah Segamat) spoke at the workshop. There was a good mix of people in the audience and the response during the Q&A session was very encouraging.

A throng of local reporters also covered the event. President of the Breast Cancer Support Group, Johor Bahru and her team of 17 members came in their beautiful uniform and 7 from Klang also were there to support the event.

The Charity Dinner & Dance
This was held in the evening at Hotel Sri Pelangi Segamat Pool Side Ballroom on 6 May 2006. The attendees were entertained with a series of cultural dances as well as free to “karaoke” after dinner. The turnout for the BCSS Segamat 1st Anniversary Charity Dinner & Dance was rather unexpected... the food was not enough!

BCSS Segamat sold out all the 500 buffet dinner tickets and judging from the crowd, there must have been quite a number of gate-crashers. The seats inside and outside the poolside ballroom were fully occupied.

A Final Word…and BCSS Segamat is reaching out to other communities
All in all, it was a huge success. BCSS Segamat has made inroads into the other communities as well. BCSS Segamat had been "invited" to hold roadshows by the Indian community in Segamat, Batu Anam and Chaah whereas the Chinese community from Yong Peng and Tangkak have approached BCSS to hold health talks in their respective areas in the near future. The District Officer's wife would also be making arrangements for the BCSS to participate and give health talks to their various NGO.

The BCSS Segamat wishes to thank the Segamat Teochew Society (Women’s group); Kai Printing, System-Vertex Computer Centre, College of Radiology, Breast Cancer Welfare Association Selangor & Wilayah and Johor Bahru Breast Cancer Support Group and all the donors to the society for making the event so successful.

About the BCSS
The members of the BCSS carry out home and hospital visits to those with breast cancer. The activities they hold include line dancing, breast prosthesis sewing and cooking classes. Beauty demonstrations by Mary Kay consultants are planned.
President of the BCSS, Mdm Loh Mee Lee spoke of the psychosocial support offered, “You should have seen them interacting & socialising with one another - no more reclusive and severely traumatised because of the disease. They are now actively participating in all our activities & living their lives as normal people.”

Their outreach activities include the interiors and networking would be through the village penghulus with the help of their Patron, the District Officer of Segamat.
