Standard of Care in Breast Cancer Workshop Goes to Penang – 19 Aug 2006

About 60 doctors and nurses involved in breast cancer care and management from the Northern region (Penang, Taiping, Alor Star) spent their Saturday in a Standard of Care (SOC) in Breast Cancer Workshop, held in the Penang Medical College. This was the second in the series, the first SOC Workshop was held in Kuala Lumpur on 22 July 2006.

Speakers from the original group who were able to make the trip to Penang were Dr Ednin Hamzah, CEO/Medical Director of Hospis Malaysia, Ms Ranjit Kaur, President of Breast Cancer Welfare Association & Reach to Recovery International, Dr Evelyn Ho, Consultant Radiologist & President of the College of Radiology, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia.

The holistic approach continued to be the focus as evidenced by the inclusion of communications, palliative care, emotional and psychosocial support in addition to epidemiology, clinical assessment, radiological investigations, pathology, surgical oncology, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy. There were active discussions during case studies reflecting the multidisciplinary team approach in breast cancer management.

Dr Suseela Muniandy, Consultant Breast Surgeon from the Penang Hospital; Dr R.Krishnan, Consultant Pathologist from Gribbles Pathology; Dr Sujit Chakraborty, Consultant Oncologist, Hospital Pantai Mutiara Penang; Dr Esam Ekl Sherbieny Abd El Aal, Clinical Oncologist, Penang Hospital and Dr Kevin Hew from Loh Guan Lye Specialists Centre.

This SOC Penang workshop was organised by the Penang General Hospital and supported by an unlimited grant from AstraZeneca

NCR 2003 Report: Breast Cancer is still the top cancer amongst women

Latest statistics from
the National Cancer Registry (NCR) show
that lung cancer is the most common cancer experienced by men in the country, whilst
breast cancer is the top cancer in women. Lung cancer accounts for 13.8 per cent of cancer cases among men. For women, breast cancer accounts
for 31 per cent of cases.
