Breast Cancer Awareness Programmes in Johor Bharu – September 2006

  • The College of Radiology and MMA Foundation Radiology Fund Subsidised Mammogram Program Launch & Breast Cancer Awareness Exhibition and Health Screening, Sungai Tiram, Johor – 9 Sep 2006
  • Breast Health Awareness at University Teknologi Malaysia – 17 Sep 2006

By Doris Wee, President, Breast Cancer Support Group, Johor Bharu

Johor’s Breast Cancer Awareness Programmes organized by the Breast Cancer Support Group, Johor Bahru (BCSGJB) started with a big bang!

Early in the morning on 9 Sep 2006, a convoy of 15 cars from The Volkswagen Club, Johor Bharu (JB) and The Singapore Malaysia Vintage Car Register led the way from JB to Sungai Tiram. Decorated with BCSG JB stickers, “Reach out to Wellness”, the convoy created publicity for the event.

Doris Wee, President of the BCSG JB sat in a canary yellow Triumph Spitfire with Mr Heng of The Singapore Malaysia Vintage Car Register. Upon arriving at Sungai Tiram, the cars created much interest among the public who were thrilled to be able to see such beautiful cars at close range.

The official programme began at 9am and started with a colouring competition for children. It was held at the Tabika nearby. The rationale of involving a kindergarten was to reach out to the mothers. Simultaneously, in the hall, the BCSG JB choir, comprising breast cancer survivors only, sang two songs. This was followed by an introduction by the President of BCSG JB on the work of the group as well as what the College of Radiology and MMA Foundation Radiology Fund’s subsidized mammogram was about. This was the second year running where funds raised for subsiding mammograms by the College of Radiology was channeled for the large state of Johor. She encouraged the eligible audience present to take advantage of this opportunity to register for the subsidized mammogram.

Dr Sariah bt Hj Musa gave a concise and comprehensive talk on breast cancer. Members of the audience came forward to ask questions after the talk. Puan Rashahadah bt Mohd, a member of BCSG JB gave a testimony of her experiences when she underwent treatment for breast cancer.

After the talk, the members of the audience, numbering about 120, went round the hall to look at the exhibition, learned the technique of how to do breast self examinations and registered for the subsidized mammogram programme. This booth was manned by BCSG JB. Some 40 eligible women (vetted by the BCSG according ot criteria set by the College of Radiology) were registered for the mammogram programme.

Many also came forward to do their Body Mass Index and had free blood sugar tests. This was carried out by the nurses of Kelinik Kesihatan Ulu Tiram and Kelinik Desa Sungai Tiram. At the Kelinik Desa, pap smear tests and clinical breast examinations were carried out.
