Art of Being Breast Aware Workshop, Petaling Jaya 16 September 2006
By Dr Evelyn Ho

About 30 women from the Wanita Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (PGRM) from the Subang Division, Bandar Utama Branch and Kampung Baru Sungai Buloh attended an afternoon workshop for breast health conducted by Dr Evelyn Ho and assisted by Rosa Ho of Johnson & Johnson Medical, Leow Kim Lan and Lynn Leong from the Breast Cancer Welfare Association. Thanks to Johnson & Johnson Medical for the venue as well as the tea!

Puan Azmar, Chief, Wanita PGRM, Selangor started the session off with a brief introduction and welcome. Present were also Parameswari, Division Head (Subang), Datin Thong Oi Lee, Chairperson, Bandar Utama Branch and Yap Yoke Len, Division Head (Kampung Baru Sungai Buloh Branch).

The session was bilingual, in Cantonese and English for the benefit of all present. Despite a few awkward moments of trying to explain concepts in Cantonese, there was still plenty of laughter, many questions and increased understanding, judging from the feedback obtained through evaluation forms. As usual, there were several who would have preferred to have an immediate checkup after the session. However, the primary aims of these workshops are to empower women to take charge of their own breast health and overcome that fear, lack of confidence in performing adequate self examinations.

The hands on sessions saw the group breaking up into 4 subgroups for more personal attention. Everyone was prepared with their own exercise mat or bed sheet and a small pillow. The session ended just before 6pm.
