Reader’s Digest Pink Ribbon Talk @ MPH Megastore, One Utama, Petaling Jaya 1 October 2006
By Dr Evelyn Ho

More than 80 people turned up at 2pm, 1 October 2006, a Sunday afternoon at the Booker Room in MPH Megastore, One Utama to hear Dr Evelyn Ho and Ms Ranjit Kaur speak on different sides to the face of breast cancer –“ The Breast & I”. The turn out was extremely encouraging and there was a handful of men in the audience!

As time was short, Dr Ho gave the brief on some basic breast cancer facts, understanding the breasts and how to be self breast aware. Tips and motivation to self breast examination were given while Ranjit spoke on her experience and wisdom gained from being diagnosed with breast cancer and her journey through the various phases of treatment and subsequent realization and how best to deal with the disease. She is now President of Reach to Recovery International Breast Cancer Support Network. She ended with important take home messages about the screening mammogram and the need to undergo treatment early so that options were better and one did not need to ‘lose’ the whole breast.

After the talk, a hands-on practical session was available on the silicon teaching breast model including Q & A on a more personal level.

The talk was a project of Reader’s Digest and a donation of RM 2,000 was made to the College of Radiology for the Breast Cancer Awareness Programmes. Reader’s Digest October issue also featured topics related to breast cancer – “New Hope In the Fight Against Breast Cancer: What’s on the Horizon and What’s Here Now” plus “A Husband’s Guide to Being There for Her”. The latter was an excellent account and insight into how a spouse dealt with breast cancer at close quarters and shares some practical points that other spouses might find helpful.

Members of the breast cancer welfare association were present to lend support to the event. Special thanks to Rosa Ho and Francis Lee, College of Radiology volunteers, and to Regina Foo of Reader’s Digest as well as all the staff at MPH MegaStore, 1 Utama.
