Breast Cancer Awareness Week in Subang Jaya Medical Centre kicks off with a Public Forum 7 October 2006
By Dr Evelyn Ho

Subang Jaya Medical Centre’s (SJMC) Breast Cancer Awareness Week from the 7 to the 14 October 2006 kicked of with a Public Forum on the 7 October afternoon (Saturday). Naturally, the topics were breast health related.

Dr Evelyn Ho, Consultant Clinical Radiologist in Megah Medical Specialists Group (a member of the Subang Jaya group) shared with the audience on The Breast & I. Having spoken to many groups over the years, Dr Ho articulated the key take home points of being breast health aware and being brave enough to take the important steps to getting one’s breast checked when something did not feel right. Some practical tips on examining changes in one’s own breasts were expounded with “live” demonstrations. The audience was taken through some of the steps in observing changes in the breasts. Teaching breast models were used as well with hands on session for the audience before and after the series of talks.

Dr Matin Mellor, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at SJMC spoke on Optimal Breast Cancer Management, following on from Dr Ho’s and providing the complete picture of breast cancer management. Ms Sophia Wong, a dietician gave practical pointers on how to eat to prepare for treatment (Chemotherapy, Surgery of both, including Radiotherapy); what to eat and how to do it while on treatment, especially for chemotherapy and how to ensure complementary therapies did not upset the treatment plan or actually negate the effects of chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

A lively Q & A session followed with tea to bring a close to an afternoon well spent!

Other programmes planned for the Breast Cancer Awareness Week included a session on Exercise After Mastectomy; Chit Chat with Dietician, Self breast examination and the Look Good Feel Good Programme.
