| The COR Mammogram Programme (CMP) – Episode 6 (2006) by Dr Evelyn Ho | 2006 New Contributions Ensures Continuity of the CoR Mammogram Programme! Just as our funds were running out, 2006 saw fresh donations – RM 100,000 from Pantai Medical Bangsar’s Wear It Pink 2 Breast Awareness and Education Campaign as well as RM 60,000 from Estee Lauder. Thanks to a group of expatriate ladies who raffled a quilt they made – we also had an extra contribution of RM 6,435. Johnson & Johnson through the Give2Asia Foundation has also contributed RM 32,800 for mammogram related programmes!
Johnson & Johnson Medical continues to be the primary sponsor of breast education collaterals such as leaflets and teaching breast models in 2006.
Just over 5,000 women (5,054) have benefited from the CoR Value Added Mammogram Programme since 2001. In the last 2 years, it has focussed on the East Coast and Johor where awareness is still relatively low and the need is greater.
We thank every sponsor and supporter since 2001, large and small who have contributed to our programme for without them, lives would not have been saved! | | | | Background information on the CMP |

First organised by the College of Radiology (COR), Academy of Medicine of Malaysia and MMA Foundation Radiology Fund (MMARF) and called the Subsidised Mammogram Programme. The CoR continues to run the programme with support from corporate donors and individuals from 2006 onwards. CoR- accredited volunteer mammogram providers – provided a value added service that included adjunct ultrasound and supplementary mammogram views as well as counselling and referral for investigations. For the first time, the CoR extended the subsidy to image guided biopsy in 2006 - thanks to our donors! Volunteer coordinators and breast cancer support groups in the various states also lent their support to the success of the CMP over the years. In 2002, when the first appeal from the CoR was made to private mammography centres to give specially priced mammograms, some centres in Malaysia have taken up the challenge. In particular, we commend Pantai Medical Centre, Bangsar for rising to the call and organising their own programmes including a breast education and awareness campaign that has also grown from strength to strength. In 2006, the funds their programme raised was channelled to the CoR’s mammogram programme. - The CMP is part of the 3-prong strategy for breast health and early detection of breast cancer. The CoR’s Breast Health Info Centre on the CoR Website (Radiology Malaysia), its collaterals including the booklet – the Art of Being Breast Aware in 3 languages are distributed to its Partners in Prevention, the Malaysian Breast Cancer Council and volunteers as well as support groups throughout Malaysia to help them in their work in raising awareness in Malaysia.
| | The CoR’s virtual office continues to maximise the impact of your donations! | The CoR continues to maintain as low an administrative, organisational and consumables expenditure to allow a larger proportion of the funds to be channelled directly to the mammogram subsidies. E-mail/electronic communications are mandatory for all the volunteer mammography centres, coordinators and collaborators involved in the programmes in Malaysia. | | | | More detailed reports of the various breast cancer awareness and mammogram programmes: | Subsidised Mammogram Programme 2005 Report – read it here! “Please don’t stop the subsidised mammogram programme!”

“The CoR Subsidised Mammogram Programme has been much anticipated in Johor as previously many of our ladies had to go to Singapore or other states in Malaysia for their mammograms. There are many who were unable to access the CMP in 2005 and we hope that the College of Radiology will run the programme in 2006 in Johor so that the others can access it at a subsidised rate. There are also those from 2005 who had abnormal mammograms who need a follow up in 2006. We will help to raise funds to provide the subsidy if funds are inadequate.” Ms Doris Wee, President of the Breast Cancer Support Group, Johor Bahru and also co-ordinator for the CMP2005/2006 in Johor.
| | Thank you, CoR MP!
| | “On 25th August 2004, I had my first mammogram and it showed I had breast cancer. I had not felt anything in my breasts at all! I would not have thought about a mammogram if not for the College of Radiology’s breast cancer awareness programmes and specifically the provision of mammograms at subsidised rates. Fortunately my friend had heard about it and told me to go for one. I feel this is a good programme for creating awareness and also helping women to access mammograms by providing a subsidy. This programme should be ongoing!” - Mdm SL Ang, 57 years old and a retired civil servant.
