The 2006 CoR Mammogram Programme Report – 5 Feb 2007
A total of 495 women benefited from the programme. In Johor, we were able to serve the smaller towns, Kota Tinggi, Pontian, Kluang, in particular Segamat in addition to Johor Bahru. 93% of the participants were from Johor, while 4.8% were from Pahang and 2.2% from Terengganu.

College of Radiology receives continued funding for the CoR Mammogram Programme – Dec 2006
The CoR is grateful to those who have donated or raised funds for its breast cancer/health awareness and value added mammogram programmes.

Johnson & Johnson through the Give2Asia Foundation donated RM 32,800. Estee Lauder donated RM 60,000 through its Pink October Fund Raising Activities while Pantai Medical Bangsar through its Wear It Pink 2 Campaign raised RM 100,000. The MMA Foundation Radiology Fund had also approved for the final year (6th year running), an amount of about RM 20,000 for the Peninsular Malaysia CoR Mammogram Programme.

The CoR wishes to underline these donations with a pledge to maximize the use of the funds for its programmes. This year (2006), for the first time, image guided biopsies (under mammogram or ultrasound) which was deemed necessary from the initial mammogram, were funded by the CoR for deserving patients from smaller towns
.

Training Programme for the LPPKN Subsidised Mammogram Programme, Selangor – 20-23 Dec 2006
The National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development organised a training session for its staff involved in a special programme to enable women of the lower income group to avail the RM 50 subsidy for mammography examinations.

Wear it Pink 2 Charity Gala Dinner – 19 Nov 2006
The College of Radiology Breast Cancer Awareness Programme was boosted by a RM 100,000 donation presented at the Pantai Medical Centre, Bangsar’s Wear It Pink 2 Charity Gala Dinner. Yg Amat Berbahagia Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor graced the occasion and was resplendently dressed in pink! The dinner was well attended and guests were treated to a fun night of entertainment!

Male Support of Breast Cancer Screening for Women: First Training Workshop for Service Providers for Women’s Health – 16-19 Nov 2006
30 participants from all over Malaysia attended the inaugural training workshop for service providers for Women’s Health in Sri Acapella, Shah Alam from the 16-19 Nov 2006. There were 7 men amongst the ladies who represented their respective state’s Family Planning Associations as well as some others from a myriad of other organisations, such as the Soroptimist International Kuantan, Wanita Umno, Palliative Care Association of Kota Kinabalu/Reach to Recovery Group, Sarawak Breast Cancer Support Group, National Population & Family Development Board, and even a school Alumni association in Kedah!

Life-Style ChangesNovember 2006
Life-Style Changes is a programme developed by Dee Siddhu and Annie Everson-Dawn. The workshops encompass makeup, massage, aromatherapy, qi qong, yoga, nutrition and diet. The latest series was held at the Breast Resource Centre in University Malaya Medical Centre in November 2006.

Sisterhood of the Travelling Quilt Nets RM 6,435! – Nov 2006
Linda Bretzke, who was the treasurer and Marti Butler donated on behalf of a group of expatriate ladies, RM 6,435 to the College of Radiology’s (CoR) Mammogram Programme. The funds were raised through a raffle for a handmade quilt that travelled even to Brunei with the assistance from one of the lady’s husband!

Marti and Linda belong to a group of expatriate women (mainly wives) who have formed the KL Craft Group and are re-thinking a change in the name. Some of them started on a fund raising activity and discussed what charity or work they would want to benefit. One thing led to another and by 4 Nov 2006, they had raised more than what they had hoped for!

The CoR thanks the ladies for their magnanimous effort that will help the CoR Mammogram Programme to continue.
 

Breast Health in Sri Aman Secondary Girls’ School, Petaling Jaya – 6 Nov 2006
Bright and early on Monday morning, the Breast Cancer Welfare Association and Dr Evelyn Ho brought breast health awareness to Sri Aman Secondary Girls’ School, Petaling Jaya through a project organised by the Interact Club.

For the hands on session - teaching self examination were Margaret, Ranbir, Chin and Lynn from the BCWA. About 300 girls from the upper secondary school and teachers remained after the morning assembly to hear what Dr Evelyn Ho had to impart, followed by a Q & A Session. Dr Evelyn presented the school with 400 copies of the October Issue of Reader’s Digest with a focus on breast cancer as well as 20 copies of her book, The Art of Being Breast Aware.

Amanita Dress with Style & Confidence Fashion Show For Women with Breast Cancer – 4 Nov 2006
It was afternoon tea with a difference at the Deccan Restaurant in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, 4 November 2006. Amanita owner, Dee Sidhu organised a Ladies Only event but not just any lady – it was a fashion show for women with breast cancer! Margaret (a participant) commented, “I have always worn baggy tops as I never had the confidence to wear anything else. Amanita has taught me that dressing can be more exciting”

The Breast & Hospice Care “Unveiled” at Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM), Klang, Selangor – 15 Oct 2006
The objectives of the talk at SGM was to increase the awareness of the importance of early detection of breast cancer, the investigations used in the early detection and secondly for increasing awareness of hospice care and to inform the SGM members of the extent of care/services available in the local community. Dr Evelyn Ho and Dr Loh Ee Chin were the speakers and Dr Michael Yoong together with SGM organised the very well attended event.

Friends of Malaysia Join Pink October Celebration Kick Off, Sandakan, Sabah – 21 Sep 2006
Through the miracle of the Internet and the accumulation of frequent flier miles on United Airlines, Thaine Allison Jr was able to participate in a wonderful, supportive and educational event. More that 250 women from the hospital, government and the community at large were in attendance at the Duchess of Kent Hospital for the Pink October Launch.

30 women laughed and learnt their way to being breast aware and were simultaneously tasked with teaching others breast health awareness. Dr Evelyn Ho again managed to keep everyone in stitches to keep the fear of breast cancer at bay and in perspective!

Breast Cancer Charity Hi-Tea, Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur 14 Sep 2006
Estee Lauder Companies, together with Malaysian Tattler, Breast Cancer Welfare Association and the Shangri-La Hotel organised a Charity Hi-Tea to raise funds towards breast cancer awareness and Breast Cancer Welfare Association, National Cancer Society of Malaysia and College of Radiology, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia.

Standard of Care in Breast Cancer Workshop Goes to Penang – 19 Aug 2006
About 60 doctors and nurses involved in breast cancer care and management from the Northern region (Penang, Taiping, Alor Star) spent their Saturday in a Standard of Care (SOC) in Breast Cancer Workshop, held in the Penang Medical College.

Pantai Medical Centre Launches Wear It Pink 2 – Breast Cancer Education & Awareness Campaign 2006 – 8 Aug 2006
In a colourful and at moments, poignant, ceremony graced by YB Dato’ Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Pantai Medical Centre (PMC), Bangsar and Asia Assistance launched its Wear It Pink 2 campaign at PMC. The ceremony included the rendition of the Ribbon of Life by Adibah Noor; testimonies by breast cancer survivors and a multimedia presentation.

The beneficiary of the funds raised in the campaign will go towards the breast cancer awareness programmes of the College of Radiology, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia. Several events have been organised, including a public forum on menopause and breast cancer, a fun walk in Bangsar, charity gala dinner and mammograms at discounted rate.

 
Livial, the Breast & Sexual Well-Being in Menopausal Patients, Putrajaya Marriott Hotel – 28 July 2006
Organon (M) Sdn Bhd organised a lecture cum workshop on A Practical Approach to Livial: What, When, Whom and Why to address the uncertainty among healthcare professionals and patients. There were some 40 participants at the meeting.

Standard of Care in Breast Cancer Series Kicks Off in Kuala Lumpur – 22 July 2006
Medical doctors primarily from the surgical and oncology units in the Klang Valley attended a 1-day workshop on Standard of Care in Breast Cancer. The topics covered showed the multidisciplinary (team) approach to good breast health/cancer care. This will ultimately impact on the quality of care that the public will receive.

Persatuan Pink Champion, Perak Charity High Tea - 20 May 2006
The Ipoh breast cancer support group, Pink Champion organised a charity high tea on 20 May 2006. A talk on breast cancer awareness by Dr S. Sumithra, a talk on social etiquette by Datin Ampikaipakan and a fashion show were held.
 
Teaching Breast Health to Young Ladies at the Vocational Training Opportunities Centre, Kuala Lumpur - 6 May 2006
Thirty-three young ladies in their late teens and twenties undergoing vocational training at the YWCA Vocational Training Opportunities Center in Kuala Lumpur had a diversion from the usual programme. They attended a workshop to introduce them to breast health and self breast examination.

The First Specialist Breast Cancer Nurse Education Course in Malaysia - 24 to 28 Apr 2006
Amanita, The National Cancer Society of Malaysia, The College of Radiology Malaysia, and Edith Cowan University organised a 5-day Specialist Breast Cancer Nurse Education Course from 24th April - 28th April 2006. 25 nurses from all over Malaysia, from both the government and private hospitals attended this fully sponsored course.

An Afternoon of Breast Self Examination and Art of Being Breast Aware at the Program Nur: Reach to Recovery 2006 Training Workshop for Breast Cancer Survivors - 19 Mar 2006
The Reach to Recovery Workshop covered topics from communication skills, to basic knowledge on breast cancer, rights of women in Malaysia, breaking the bad news and role of the hospice. In addition a 3-hour breast self examination and breast health awareness workshop was held.

Dee Sidhu, breast cancer survivor extraordinaire is determined to improve after cancer care through her chain of Amanita stores – Jan 2006
Dee Sidhu, the enterprising owner of Amanita, is a breast cancer survivor and she is committed to bringing better “after cancer care” and care during treatment. 2006 Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign kicks off – 3 Jan 2006
This year, the College of Radiology and its partners in the Malaysian Breast Cancer Council (MBCC) are sparing no efforts to increase the level of awareness of Breast Cancer in Malaysia. The media campaign follows through on the efforts of Novartis to recognise breast cancer advocacy and encourage volunteerism in Malaysia. See report on the Novartis-MBCC Breast Cancer Leadership Award 2005.

Dr Evelyn Ho (College of Radiology) and Mrs Margaret Gooi (Breast Cancer Welfare Association) were guests on RTM TV2's Hello on Two and TraXX FM bright and early on the first working day of 2006. Their passion and determination that the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign got off to a good start was there for all to see and hear!

It is the intention of the MBCC that breast cancer related topics will feature on the Malaysian electronic and print media throughout 2006.
