Specialist Breast Cancer Nurse Education Course, Kuala Lumpur  – 18 to 22 Jun 2007

Twenty-seven nurses from all over Malaysia including Sabah and Sarawak congregated in the National Cancer Society of Malaysia’s Resource & Wellness Centre, Kuala Lumpur for an intensive 5-day course in June 2007. The course was primarily conducted by Professor Kate White, PhD, Professor of Nursing and Director of Research from the Faculty of Nursing, University of Sydney was the primary lecturer. Jane Gregson, a specialist breast nurse from Australia was also on hand to lend her expertise. It is an accredited module with certification from the University of Sydney, Australia. Both were also in Kuala Lumpur at the Inaugural Specialist Breast Cancer Nurse Education Course conducted in 2006.

The course also featured a panel of local speakers: Prof Dr Looi Lai Meng, Consultant Pathologist from the University Malaya Medical Centre, Dr Matin Mellor, Clinical Oncologist, Subang Jaya Medical Centre, Dr Evelyn Ho, Clinical Radiologist, Megah Medical Specialists Group, Dr Harjit Kaur, Consultant Breast Surgeon from Putrajaya Hospital, Dr Soma, Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon from Subang Jaya Medical Centre, Dr Ednin Hamzah, Medical Director/CEO of Hospis Malaysia, Dr Saunthari Dharmalingam, Executive Director of the National Cancer Society of Malaysia, Eunice Toh, dietician from the Nilai Cancer Institute; Ho Sweet Lee from the Subang Jaya Medical Centre Oncology Centre and Joanne Bruce from Biossentials on Complementary Therapies.

Despite the heavy schedule of lectures and interactive sessions covering the holistic care for those with breast cancer, everyone took time out to be at a dinner hosted by the Australian High Commissioner on 20 June 2007.

The course was sponsored by BP, organised by Amanita and National Cancer Society of Malaysia and supported by the College of Radiology Academy of Medicine of Malaysia.
 

 

NCR 2003 Report: Breast Cancer is still the top cancer amongst women

Latest statistics from
the National Cancer Registry (NCR) show
that lung cancer is the most common cancer experienced by men in the country, whilst
breast cancer is the top cancer in women. Lung cancer accounts for 13.8 per cent of cancer cases among men. For women, breast cancer accounts
for 31 per cent of cases.
