2007 Activities ...
|  The College of Radiology Value Added Mammogram Report 2007 – 14 June 2008
299 women benefitted from the 2007 CMP which were mainly for women from in and around Segamat. The Breast Cancer Support Society (BCSS) of Segamat was integral in coordinating this effort where women paid only RM30 for their value added mammogram, transport to and fro was provided and for those women needed biopsy, this was also funded by the CMP2007. Four women were detected with breast cancer.

|  Reports from the Land Below the Wind Breast Cancer Activities, Sabah – Dec 2007
The Sandakan Breast Health Awareness Committee has been busy with several activities in Sabah. They held a charity jogathon in December 2007, a public health forum in Apin-Apin as well as another public forum in Keningau in August 2007. At the public health forum, self breast examination workshops were held in addition to public talks. Dr Azlina Firzah Aziz and Mary Alex Mansiw conducted these forums.

The Breast Cancer Support Society (BCSS) of Segamat held a dinner & dance for survivors, caregivers and all their members. The theme for the event was “Celebration of Life”. Every participant went back a winner and with a gladness in their hearts for as Lim Ah Cheng, a survivor, puts it, “I am very happy tonight for I was able to show to people that I can be as beautiful as any woman and even with breast cancer, I have the guts to go up on stage and sing!”

|  Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign Charity Gala Dinner, KL Hilton – 7 Nov 2007
Estée Lauder Companies’s first charity gala dinner raised substantial funds for the breast cancer awareness, advocacy and support community. Entertainment from Joanne Yeoh, violinist extraordinaire, Jaclyn Victor and Vince Chong as well as a fashion show of exclusive pink-inspired gowns, subsequently auctioned off provided ample activity for the night!

|  Teddy Bear’s Tea Party at The Attic, Kuala Lumpur – 7 Oct 2007
It was a “beary” happy tea party to introduce a marvellous story of life and living with cancer by Annie Smith, PhD, a Canadian who had breast and then ovarian cancer. Annie is an artist, author and lecturer in art history at Sheridan College and an Associate Professor Adjunct at the University of Toronto. Her book is titled Bearing Up with Cancer.

|  Estée Lauder Companies’ Lights up Pavilion Kuala Lumpur in Pink – 1 Oct 2007
Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) has illuminated hundreds of famous buildings, monuments and landmarks in glowing pink light in over 50 countries. On the night of 1st Oct 2007, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur became the first in Malaysia to be part of the ELC’s Global Landmarks Illumination Initiative, a brainchild of Evelyn Lauder.
This was indeed a grand start to ELC’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign in Malaysia. Read more here
|  Beginners’ Breast Health Workshop, Petaling Jaya – 22 Sep 2007
In this beginners’ breast health workshop, participants learnt the correct technique of systematic self breast examination. Participants were energised to be more breast health aware in this fun yet serious workshop held at the Breast Cancer Welfare Association office in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Twenty-two ladies spent a good 4 hours at a trainers’ workshop on breast health to rejuvenate and update themselves on techniques, styles, tips and tricks to impart breast health awareness in others. Tan Sar Fee, from Kluang, Johor found it, “very motivating!”. Yet others wanted it to be a full day workshop as there was so much to cover.

“It changed my life....” seemed to ring true for the gutsy women who shared their adventures with the delegates of the International Conference on Survivorship and Supportive Care in Cancer. The conference was held in Crowne Plaza Mutiara Kuala Lumpur from 10-12 August 2007. The theme was Enabling Survival-Promoting Early Intervention and Care.

The name of the congress is self explanatory. Breast and colorectal (colon and rectum) cancers were the focus of the scientific programme presented at the congress. Breast and colorectal cancers are very common in women and men respectively in Malaysia. Workshops on Breast ultrasound as well as laparoscopic colorectal surgery were also held. Topics covered attracted surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, gynaecologists, physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other paramedical personnel. There were about 1,000 delegates at the congress.

|  Saving Lives Through Early Detection Charity Hi-Tea, Kuala Lumpur – 28 June 2007
The Breast Cancer Welfare Association (BCWA) and Avon Malaysia has forged a partnership to raise funds to conduct hands-on training workshops for women in local communities in Malaysia to enable them to practice early detection of breast cancer. RM 127, 212.25 were raised during the Charity Hi Tea on 28 June 2007.

|  Specialist Breast Cancer Nurse Education Course, Kuala Lumpur – 18-22 June 2007
Twenty-seven nurses from all over Malaysia including Sabah and Sarawak congregated in the National Cancer Society of Malaysia’s Resource & Wellness Centre, Kuala Lumpur for an intensive 5-day course in June 2007. The course was sponsored by BP, organised by Amanita and National Cancer Society of Malaysia and supported by the College of Radiology, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia.

|  East Coast Surgical Symposium: Challenges in Management of Breast Cancer, Kuantan – 12-13 May 2007
The first East Coast Surgical Symposium (ECSS) centred on Breast Cancer was held in the Auditorium of the Kuliyyah of Medicine, Indera Makhota Campus, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in Kuantan, Pahang from 12-13 May 2007. The symposium was designed to be a platform to deliver knowledge and experience from around the country as well as to delineate the role of healthcare providers in the management of breast cancer.

Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) Malaysia’s 20th Anniversary Celebration was held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Kuala Lumpur in a glitzy dinner affair. The College of Radiology was delighted and thrilled to receive a donation of RM 50,000 for its mammogram and breast health programmes for 2007 at the dinner. Soprano Tan Soo Suan accompanied by the Dama Orchestra entertained the guests.

|  Reach to Recovery Training – 16-18 Mar 2007
A training workshop for volunteer breast cancer survivors in Malaysia was held in the Breast Cancer Welfare Association (BCWA) from 16th to 18th of March 2007. There were 18 participants, two of whom were from Indonesia. Topics covered were to prepare them for effective counselling, support, advocacy, training and teaching of breast health awareness.

|  Standard of Care in Breast Cancer Goes to Johor Bahru – 10 Feb 2007
This full day programme was held at the Sri Pandan Auditorium, Hospital Sultan Ismail. It was well attended by doctors, nurses and other health professionals from Johor. This was the first meeting organized by the Oncology Centre, Hospital Sultan Ismail under the helm of Dr Mohd Roslan Haron. Astrazeneca sponsored the event.

deeply wished to win, I did win something -
more knowledge and information about breast cancer programmes that the College of Radiology organized... like the
value added mammogram programme in the East Coast and
how Sandakan started their own breast cancer awareness activities.
With the pamphlets
given in the goodie bag, I shared the information
by putting them up in
my classroom
information board. It's very enlightening for my friends and teachers to read. Many of them are very ignorant about breast cancer.
Even though my class
has male students and male teachers, I don’t think it's a problem for them to read about it too. (Knowledge ought
to be shared!).
As for the pink stress ball, I have given it to
my homeroom teacher
as teachers have more stress than students
