Stand Up For Pink @ Bangsar Village, Kuala Lumpur 1 Oct 2009
By Dr Evelyn Ho

Bangsar Village goes pink for the first time in support of the International Breast Cancer Awareness Month of October. Together with the Malaysian Breast Cancer Council, Bangsar Village launched the Pledge Wall for Pink to encourage all to pledge to be breast aware and also help raise funds for the University Malaya Medical Centre Breast Cancer Fund.

The Pledge Wall for Pink, which is part of a series of breast awareness activities under the Stand Up For Pink campaign, will be on display from 1 October to 7 November at the Bangsar Village skybridge. The public is encouraged to donate a token sum to the breast cancer fund and write a message on the pledge wall to be breast health aware or in support of those with breast cancer.

Yang Amat Berbahagia Toh Puan Dato’ Seri Hajah Dr Aishah Ong launched the event. Also present at the launch were singer-songwriter Juwita Suwito, the management of Bangsar Village and the Stand Up For Pink organising committee members.

Stand Up For Pink is a collaborative effort between Bangsar Village, Venusbuzz, Lariche Community, College of Radiology Academy of Medicine and the Malaysian Breast Cancer Council.

To show their solidarity for the programme, Toh Puan Dato’ Seri Hajah Dr Aishah Ong, singer-songwriter Juwita Suwito and members of the Malaysian Breast Cancer Council led all guests and staff from the shopping centre to take turns at the pledge wall. The Harley Owners Group Malaysia Chapter representatives also turned up in support of this event.

“We would like to encourage the public to participate in our activities to learn more about breast health,” said Dr. Evelyn Ho, spokesperson for the Stand Up For Pink organising committee.

She added, “Breast health is everybody’s business, not just women’s. The target for this campaign is everyone, because in the end breast cancer affects everyone indirectly. Men although rare, can also get breast cancer.”

Other activities planned would be
Gin & Jacqie "Bag The Awareness" Exhibition where thematic bag designs with a message on breast cancer will be on display; online awareness on www.venusbuzz.com/pink where everyone can go online to pledge to be more breast aware, obtain resources on breast health and support the cause by buying pink products for charity. Breast Awareness Community Desks will be manned during the weekends for the month of October.

The desk will be manned by volunteers (National Cancer Society of Malaysia, Hospis Malaysia, Breast Cancer Welfare Association and also volunteer counsellors) who have experienced the trials of breast cancer personally or through a loved one or are trained to counsel on various aspects of breast health and breast cancer. Public health talks would be held on 10, 24 and 31 Oct 2009 afternoons.

Pink October will end on 31 Oct 2009, with a Treasure Hunt…and this is just the run up to the very exciting OutRageously PiNk Nite on 7 Nov 2009 (OPN 2009).

The finale of Stand Up For Pink , the OPN2009 will start at 6pm. This event will have lots of entertainment lined up for the public such as appearances by the Mini Club and Harley Owners Group (Malaysia Chapter), Juwita Suwito and Elvira, Bhangra Jam by Celebrity Fitness, Laughter Yoga by Nomad Adventures and even a Topless Contest for men. Breast cancer survivors will also have their share of the spotlight participating in a special ‘pink’ fashion show!

To ensure that the rest of the family has fun at the event, there will be a host of face painting activities, free sculpture balloons and clowns too. As the theme of the night is pink, the public are encouraged to participate in the event wearing pink.

So the launch augurs more in terms of awareness activities that will target all age groups, and focussed on breast health and not just breast cancer.

Make that date on 7 Nov 2009, and watch the Harley Owners Group bikers come in something outrageous…and pink…..you have to come to Bangsar Village to see that…..
