| Health Camp at Voules Estate, Tenang, Johor – 12 June 2010 by Maria Kinson
Five volunteers and 5 breast cancer survivors started out from Segamat at 8.30am to Voules Estate Tenang to take part in "Kempen Kesihatan Kawasan Parlimen Labis" on Saturday, the 12 June 2010. The 4-hour event was specially organised for all the estate workers and their families and it drew a crowd of 358 people.
It was a very informative eye-opener for the 133 ladies who came to the Breast Cancer Support Society Segamat (BCSS) booth where they were made aware of the rising incidence of breast cancer, risks factors, importance of self-breast examination and shown graphic pictures that had been sourced from the Radiology Malaysia Breasthealth website.
Three BCSS members took turns to impart breast cancer information to groups of 10-12 ladies with the use of visual aids. Two managed the registration while one member took charge of the lucky draw at the end of each “breast cancer awareness” session. The other 4 members did breast examination as well as registration for the College of Radiology Value Added Mammogram which was being conducted at the CoR-accredited centre, IIUM Breast Centre in Kuantan.
Seven ladies had lumps detected out of the 77 ladies who turned up for the breast examination that was being carried out at the estate clinic. Twenty-six of them registered to go for highly subsidized mammogram.
One obvious fact noted during the health camp was the total lack of knowledge where breast cancer is concerned. The good thing is this event has made the village heads who attended, aware of the need to educate their ladies and we have been requested to come to give talks at 3 villages and 2 temples at different locations. This was encouraging in our efforts to raise breast cancer/health awareness. | | | Scenes at the Health Camp | | | |
