IJM Plantations Berhad Gives Back to Society Making Breast Health Awareness One of Its CSR Initiatives in Sandakan, Sabah – 31 July 2010

IJM Plantations Berhad has been supporting breast health awareness as one of its way of giving back to the community since 2006. IJMP encourages awareness at the grassroots level. The 2010 plan is to work at the secondary school level in the interior of Sabah, reaching out to school girls aged 15-17 years (and their mothers too). Breast health awareness and how to familiarise oneself with one’s own breasts are the objectives.

How does IJM actually provide impetus and assistance?
IJM sponsors and organises the groundwork for the projects with the schools, logistics and transport as well as refreshment. Schools are engaged in a manner that will create a positive reception to breast health teaching. The Chairperson of the Breast Health Awareness Committee, Mary Mansiw via the Duchess of Kent Hospital in Sandakan, would arrange for the school visits and coordinate the talks with hands-on demonstrations on teaching breast models.

IJM also deploys their hospital assistants and nurses in the estates to assist. Through IJM’s 12 seater van and ambulance, transportation is covered. Portable LCD projector and screen will be loaned for use in the teaching sessions. Handouts in Bahasa Malaysia, a video clip on breast self examination as well as media promotion for public awareness would be organised. For 2010, two secondary schools have been identified, one in the small fishing town of Beluran and another in a village, Kampung Segaliud.

Joseph Tek, CEO and MD of IJM Plantations affirms, “I personally hold the belief that it is imperative that we go out beyond our comfort zone and reach out to the young on the ground especially in the interior, for health awareness to be fortified in the future.”
