| Launch Of Hospis Malaysia’s Newly Renovated Building, Kuala Lumpur – 15 Sep 2011
Hospis Malaysia reached a new milestone as it launched its newly renovated building to provide for holistic palliative care for its growing number of patients. Hospis Malaysia now has the much needed space and the capacity to provide for a wider range of services - increased facilities for a greater role and commitment to teaching and research, and enhanced day care facility, counseling, treatment and out-patient services, a pharmacy as well as a more conducive space for administration and clinical operations. It has a multi-faith room which is unique in Malaysia, and a library/resource centre for palliative care. The extension to the new building focuses on the provision of facilities, activities and initiatives, for palliative care education for health professionals.
Present to grace the launch was Encik Rohazam Shah bin Ahmad, private secretary of YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, the Minister of Higher Education Malaysia. During his speech, he urged all NGOS and professional organisations, public and private healthcare and educational institutions and communities to join hands to promote the agenda for quality end-of-life care. He went on to highlight the need to promote formal education in palliative care.
Teaching and research are key components of Hospis Malaysia’s services. Chairman of the Council Y. Bhg. Brig. Gen. (Rtd.) Dato’ Richard Robless said, “Our involvement in education also helps reach other health care professionals to equip them with the basic skills to improve care of patients at the end of life”. “Education and research drives us to review our own practices, keep abreast of developments and improve the quality of our service,” he added.
Hospis Malaysia has been promoting palliative care education in local medical and nursing schools, and conducting palliative care workshops for healthcare professionals since 1997. The demand for their educational services continues to increase dramatically. In 2010, Hospis Malaysia’s six workshops attracted more than 300 doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals, locally and from neighbouring countries as well.
