Breast Cancer Survivors at the 27th Penang International Dragon Boat Festival - 27 to 28 May 2006
By Wong Mee Yee, Pink Challengers Team Captain, Breast Cancer Survivor

The Breast Cancer Welfare Association’s (BCWA) own Pink Challengers dragon boat team consisting of 18 breast cancer survivors, 2 supporters, a volunteer coach, the Team Manager and Assistant Manager participated in the 27th Penang International Dragon Boat Festival at Teluk Bahang Dam on 27th and 28th May 2006. This annual International event saw many teams from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, Thailand and Malaysia taking part in the races.

This year's slogan was "Paddle for a Peaceful Tomorrow". Two breast cancer survivors' teams from Australia , the Adelaide Survivors' Abreast and the South Australia (SA) Dragons Abreast gave support and promoted breast cancer awareness by taking part in the breast cancer survivors' race.

SA Dragons Team A were first with a time of 3:28.74, followed by Adelaide Survivors' Abreast who clocked in at 3:35.84. The B Team of SA Dragons Abreast came in third place with a time of 3:39.29 while Pink Challengers was fourth with 4:02.35 and fifth place went to the Pink Combo who managed to complete the race in 4:42.52. The latter two teams were made up entirely of BCWA members. All the survivors who participated in this annual event were winners in their own special way as they had proved that one could still participate in competitive sport and lead a normal active, healthy lifestyle after having breast cancer. Nothing is impossible and we showed the world that it was still possible to beat the odds.

Other than the races, members of the two BCWA teams had a lot of fun and camaraderie with many “makan sessions” and lots of sharing with our sister teams from Adelaide and South Australia. We came home enriched with the experience and feeling mighty pleased. So, breast cancer survivors out there, do join the dragon boat race teams.

It’s not about winning but about participating and getting the world to notice ……Breast cancer is NOT THE END OF THE WORLD!!
