Cost Comparison of Breast Imaging
The cost comparison of the different breast imaging modalities is detailed as above. Although these figures are in US$, it gives us the relative cost difference in Malaysia.
Without conversion of US dollar to ringgit, these actually give a good estimate of how the examinations are “charged” in Malaysia. Unfortunately the costs of the technology (machines, equipment etc) entail that currency conversion cost and therefore, the prices paid by patients at private centres in Malaysia are actually relatively low compared to the acquisition costs of these imaging modalities. In government centres and university hospitals, the examinations are highly subsidised. As an example, an ultrasound machine of US$150,000.00 acquired in Malaysia may cost about RM570,000.00 (if the current conversion rate of RM3.80 to US$1.00 is used). However, the average charge for the breast ultrasound in Malaysia (performed by a trained radiologist and regardless of the type and quality of the ultrasound machine) is only about RM80.00. While in the United States, even if the breast ultrasound was charged at US$100.00, this would translate to about RM380.00. |
