How often do I need to have a mammogram or ultrasound or both?

Regardless of age, some of you undergoing mammograms regularly may also need ultrasound as an adjunct to the mammogram to follow up some abnormalities, which are unlikely to be breast cancer but require monitoring.

However, the frequency you may need to undergo examinations will depend on many factors. What applies to the screening population (that means, those without any symptoms of breast changes or signs) may not apply in your special case. Remember a screening mammography has a different implications from diagnostic mammograms. Always discuss with your doctor when in doubt.

The factors include:

  • What was found on initial tests and examination?
  • The symptom(s) you have
  • Previous findings on your tests
  • Family history and other risk factors
  • Your doctor’s plan of monitoring or surveillance for you
  • Your level of anxiety which is normally conveyed to your doctor
  • Your perception of risks and benefits

Communication with your attending doctor is essential every step of the way! What may apply for your friend may not apply in your case. Every one is an individual.

It is recommended that after the age of 40, regular screening mammography should be done at 1 to 2 yearly intervals.

However, there may be other factors influencing this schedule, such as you may have an abnormality that requires more close follow up with ultrasound or even mammography. Always check with your doctor.
