Major Advantages of Mammography

Not all cancers are lumps

Not all cancers can be detected by touch/physical examination, until it becomes large enough. Depending on the growth rate of the type of cancer in the breast, it may be 1 to 2 years before it can be felt.

Although it is not 100% accurate, the mammogram can:

  • Detect lesions in their very early stage
  • Detect lesions that are not palpable
  • Detect lesions before they are palpable
  • Give important information about the “lump” or change you or your doctor feels

Your regular mammograms when compared with your previous films may be able to give added information and help your radiologist pick up subtle changes that may be due to breast cancer. Regular mammograms may therefore give you a better chance of picking up early breast cancer than the occasional mammogram.

“No woman has ever been shown
to develop breast cancer as a result of mammography”

The reality is, with
today’s equipment, radiation is minimal. It
is far more dangerous
not to find breast cancer at its earliest stage than to be exposed to a low dose of radiation.
